NK from what I've read doesn't get the latest Russian technology. I don't think they can afford it. Supposedly their army has mostly Soviet-era technology, though it is massive in scale. I think I read it's the 4th largest military in the world. And their special forces are supposedly the largest in the world and top-notch. But in the long run, SK would still probably beat them due to superior technology, unless China joins in.

Explosive armor. Packs of explosives that, when hit explode outward, reducing the penetration of the missile hitting the tank. At least that's what they look like.

Yeah its explosive armor on old Soviet era junk T72's.
If I remember correctly the British developed it, we bought it... Russia stole it.

How far across Russia could those things actually roll before breaking down?

On paved highways not very far. The tracks are apparently the hard bushed "combat" tracks used for off road. In any case, tracked vehicles don't take well to high, or even moderate, mileage. Most track vehicles are moved by rail or trailer trucks, known as "dragon wagons" during my tour.

Probably not that far.
T72's are a bit modern for my knowledge, but the old German tanks would show a lot of wear after a few hundred miles. Guderians' 100 or so mile drive around the Kiev pocket caused his vehicals great wear. The 21st Panzer in North Africa, suffered great losses from break downs. Rommels great drives into the desert would burn a ton of fuel and cause a lot of wear and tear. German armord divisons would suffer attrition from just moving. Tanks not only wear a lot but consume vast amounts of fuel, rail is how most German armor moved, even during some invasions, Poland for instance.

On second look, that picture is called t72b_minsk, so probably it's not from the invasion of Georgia and those may not even be Russians but Belorussians. Maybe some sort of parade.

Correct, that is not a combat interval.

I recall hearing not too long ago that a set of tracks for an M1 lasts about 2500 miles, which is why they get trailered or moved by rail a lot.

Yeah not to mention the 5,000 gallons of jet fuel it takes to move them that 2,500 miles.

Track wear and fuel limitations are exactly why prime movers are so important and why rail junctions are critical strategic targets. Military equipment, tanks or otherwise, usually isn't built with highway cruising efficiency in mind... Thats whats really great about UNIMOGs and GWagens, they get around the little problem quite nicely

I don't imagine the HETT with an M1 on the trailer gets very good mileage either. My International Paystar loaded up to 130,000 lbs gross (about what an M1 weighs) used to get about 3 mpg on JP8 on convoys. The loaded HETT is more like 200,000 lbs, has a lot more tires on the ground (rolling resistance), and 150 more horsepower than I had.
Oh, and I don't think a draft would be appropriate at this time.

That was even so with the M113 Armored Personnel Carries which were mostly Aluminum in Germany when I was in the Army (despite the rubber pads on the treads). But, Cobble Stones hold up.
