I believe our present Military is too small to handle the ongoing missions it already has and is in fact getting burned out.

And, now I believe North Korea clearly becoming more aggressive I believe in part due to the fact our Military is spread too thin and would have sever difficulty in responding to another major conflict.

we have a huge military, its just spread out over the world. I dont think with the way the economy is going that we should start to draft people and then pay them.

I think you have a point D,

Besides the bills they are trying to pass that make service a mandatory part of citizenship, entering the service should be enforced.

As a global force (a faltering one at best) we are expected, and sometimes demanded, to pick up the pieces in other countries.

Besides the 'humanitarian' endeavors that may be associated with our political involvement, regular military duty by the population will, for the most part, strengthen our heritage, our communities, sense of pride, and re-establish the value/ worth /price of living in a country that you call home.

Personally, I am pretty anti-establishment, but I think this country is soft. Mandatory duty is an efficient and meaningful way to establish a sense of pride and ownership in a country... consider it an investment.

This is not an argument but, I have never understood how when the US was just starting to recover from our "Great Depressioin" was able to afford to send massive amounts of Manpower and Equipment all over the world in WWII.

Supply equipment to Allied Countries during the war and help rebuild Europe after the War with the "Marshall Plan".

How and who paid for all of the above?

Also I do not know if we have a huge Military compared to the past. It is clear that that are having to rotate Troops back the Iraq were as in Vietnam they rotated out of the country and later sent home. They were replaced by mostly drafted personel.
(When I was in the Army during that time period my best guess is that 10% of those I served with volunteered for service; the rest had been drafted.)

They'll be more incidents of friendly fire, as well as other, harsher events if we start drafting into the military. The system we have right now keeps most of the trash out of the military.

I believe every person living in the USA should serve every man, woman, diasbled or not from the time you come out of high school and give 3 years, if you live hear you serve and if you do not by choice than you have no rights to ownership of and land the rest protected, of course people from other countrys have to give 4 years before they are allowed to buy or rent a place to live , if they are an exchange student thats fine but the day after they finish its on the plane back home NO staying for another 35 years getting another piece a paper saying you sat at a desk --

I did not see it that way yet it was believed that for every combat troop their were 9 others in the rear with the gear supporting them, all of the special forces were RA remember that term US ment you were drafted - jz

hmm, not really. I think you are joking but the National Guard is a true component of our total force package. It was designed this way, so that state militias could recieve federal funding and equpment and be cognizant in the tactics of the federal army so that in time of need, the National Guard of each state could be called upon to agument the Regular Army. They have done this in many wars, including WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and of course now Gulf War I & II. National Guard troops wear the same uniform and are trained at the same Army schools that regular Army troops are. They just have an additional mission of servng the govenor of the state for natural disasters and civil unrest. Anybody who is in the guard in the last 3 decades knows what the mission is and if they say they don't then they are either thick-headed or stupid.

Regarding a draft, it may be time to consider a limited call up. We could use some more soldiers on hand. There would be a huge hue and cry from the general populace though as the anti-military crowd would implode from the "crisis" that our pampered young would face. I am glad that I served in an all volunteer force, although that Armed Service of almost all draftees sure did well in WWII.

How about we just pay our service people a decent wage like they deserve and maybe we will have more qualified people sign up.

There are many benefits to citizen soldiers, and there are many benefits to professional soldiers. If there is a change, I would prefer mandatory service for everyone over a draft though.

As a parent with a 19 year old boy, I think a two year hitch would not be bad. It would give our kids a chance to work with others from around the country, learn what it means to be an American and get a sense of pride and discipline that my generation (no draft) lacks...

However, I would only draft support troops and let the combat forces be volunteers who would come out of the pool of draftees and people who sign up at a recruiter. This way the combat troops would be in for longer and be as professional as they are now. I don't want to see a bunch of draftee kids with little training go out into combat. Let the best of them volunteer and be trained properly. I believe that most of the specializations are geared towards a four year training/duty cycle and to compress that into a two year draftee's hitch would not be good.

I have been hinting to my son that joining the USAF after college (he is going into his sophomore year and I don't want him to stop going) would be a good thing...

If NATO could come together in unity, we would have plenty of troops for any conflict. Unforntunately, the British are the only ones we can really count on when needed.

I like the idea of a general community service idea better. Once you graduate either high school or college, you have to sign up for 'something' for two years. Military, or community service of some sort like working at a county hospital, teacher/aid in a rural community fireman, police, forest service, park ranger, or work in your field of education.

There is so much that needs doing in this country. I think this would be a good alternative to paying back student loans as well.
