Anybody familiar with fork lifts?

My brother has a clark forklift with a 4 cyl. LP motor in it. The starter engages but wont turn the engine......

Anybody know where I can find some info on this?

I think he seized the motor, but I cant find any "crank bolt" to turn to verify.

He paid over 7k for this 6 years ago, long story short, never really did any maintenance to the thing unless it wouldnt start.

You have to access the crank bolt from underneath, and then it's really tight to the fan. If it has a metal fan, you can use that to turn the engine if the belts are fairly tight.

A bad battery cable connection or battery ground connection can give this symptom. If you can turn the engine easily by hand then check those connections. If not then...

if the started, all connections, and batter are rules out, on the older clarks, you need to remove the floor plate. once you have that off, you should see a screen that will give you access to the flywheel and tq. try turning with a pry bar. i seriously doubt its seized. though the old clarks are a pos in my opinion, they are pretty bullet proof. ive seen them run with no coolant and enough moisture in the oil to make it look like a blown head gasket. they do have a funky starter.

My brother immediately thought it was the starter. He took it in to be rebuilt. No change.

The engine wont turn via the fan, even if I applied more tension to the belt.

Either the engine has GREAT compression, or its locked..

He should have kept up on maintenance then- or so I keep telling my current boss, now I'm getting my own separate bay in the shop where dead equipment will go. I have a guaranteed job at this place as long as he doesn't go completely broke and continue bouncing paychecks.

If it was hydrolocked, that would have cleared up by now, and you would have known it had a blown headgasket. There would have been tons of steam out the exhaust. I have never seen a head gasket blow with the engine off.

Did it suddenly die and won't restart, or did he shut it off and now it won't restart?

I was told it was fine, until they went to go use it again, and it would not turn at all.

This is the exact symptom of a loose connection on the battery, battery clamp, or ground wire. Has this been checked? A bad connection provides enough current to let the starter engage, but not enough to turn it over. Ask me how I know. Have you tried turning the engine by hand yet?
