Toyota GT 86 - thoughts?

2500lb, RWD 4cyl sports coupe. They finally revealed "official" images, as opposed to just the concept that I pictured below. It is a joint effort between Subaru (allegedly the chassis and engine) and Toyota (allegedly the styling), which should be amazing. I am eagerly anticipating this car, how about you guys?

If it says Toyota on it, it is most likely a pretty good car.

Actually it is going to have a Scion badge on it here in the U.S. as the "FR-S". The interior looks cheap but then again its a cheap car. I'll probably test drive one when they hit dealers, but I might be a little too old for it.

Toyota's (Scions) have always had plain looking, but adequately functional interiors. For ME, that wouldn't hold me back.

Jalopinik seems obsessed with this car. Make it AWD and give it a small turbo, then we'll talk. Of course doing that defeats the price point. Make them options...

Why complicate a simple RWD drivetrain with AWD. I like this car but it is not going to sell well. People will want moar power to back up the looks of this car... or at least a factory turbo with aftermarket potential.

Wondering what Subaru's iteration will look like.

A RWD Subaru drivetrain sounds interesting. I love Subarus, but AWD has its limitations as far as handling goes. Not crazy about the body style. I prefer sedans.

The aftermarket potential of a turbo is WHY they won't offer it. Then you won't spend money on a new one every 3 years. If the Genesis Coupe weren't so big, they'd have to sell this thing at like $17'000.
Of course, STI swaps will commence within about an hour of release.

every RWD Toyota has been a hit.

I'm kind of sad its not getting the Toyota badge. since the Supra in the mid 90s there hasn't been a RWD Toyota car.

Of course there is the Lexus IS300

Pretty much any car this man had his hands on has been a hit.

Yesterday a TT Supra pulled up next to me at a light, MASSIVE intercooler, nice wheels (bronze on black). Beautiful machinery. I miss the days of the Jap muscle car wars. Some examples:

Those manufacturers still offer high performance cars (RX-8, 350z) but none of them are nearly as balls-to-the-walls as these were, except for maybe the EVO and STi.

Light weight (more like 2650 lb, but still), nice simple interior, good styling, beltline not super-high to appeal to the safety-nancies, RWD, and available with a real transmission, not a paddle-box designed for right-foot amputees.

Win!
