Ned,
I've always wanted to do something like that. I don't know what is the closest fit, but I imagine the drivetrain from a 190E or C220 is an easy fit. If you want to keep it a Diesel, the drivetrain out of a 190D 2.2 should be an easy fit. The drivetrain out of a 190D 2.5 turbo or 300D 2.5 might fit and will give you moder car power. Of course the 170D might have a crossmember arrangement that makes fitment of a newer MB engine difficult. The weak point of a converted 170D is probably the brakes. I don't know what it will take to fit modern brakes to that car. You'll also have to upgrade the electrical system to 12V or reduce the voltage for native systems. Sixto 91 300SE 81 300SD |
