It is National Donut Day and your administration has come out in support of National Donut Day. It sounds ridiculous,” Lauer opined.

“It doesn’t sound ridiculous; one donut is not going to hurt you,” Bloomberg countered. “In moderation, most things are okay. Number two, think about what National Donut Day is. National Donut Day celebrates a lot of young ladies during World War I called ‘donut lassies’ who went and gave donuts to our soldiers while they were fighting to protect democracy. I’ll stand behind it.”

“Your honor,” Lauer interjected. “That was before obesity was a national epidemic. If anything, if moderation works for donuts, why not with soft drinks?”

“That is exactly what we’re trying to do with soft drinks,” said the Mayor. “Instead of the big 32-ounce, get two 16 ounces if you want. But history shows, all the tests show what you’ll do is probably drink one.”

“Happy National Donut Day,” Lauer said dryly.

“Thank you very much,” replied Bloomberg.

Eat just one? That's crazy talk.

Speaking of donuts

Am I the only one who just can't see the attraction of Krispy Creme's offerings?

I stopped eating fried dough a number of years ago under Dr's orders, but before that I used to be quite a frequent consumer of fried dough products.

Longtime loyalty to the local Montgomery Donuts chain of yesteryear, and also a pretty big fan of Dunkin Donuts.

OTOH, the krispy cremes, even consumed fresh off the assembly line in store, always left me wondering why I even ate that nasty oily sugary hunk of carbs.

You don't think about donuts, you just eat them. They really are nasty if you ponder them too much. White flour and sugar combined to make a sponge for the grease they're fried in. 2 or three is a day's worth of calories and a week's worth of carbs. I maybe eat donuts three times a year now that I'm retired. Teachers, being mainly women, live on carbohydrates and are always bringing sugary crap to work and leaving it out for everybody in the workroom. I don't crave stuff like that and when it's not around I don't miss it, but when it is around, I can't help myself. Dunkin' Donuts buttermilk sticks are impossible to stop at one. Krispy Kremes are melt in your mouth good when you get them straight out of the fryer, but 2 hours later they're just another donut.
