Looks in good shape. The ones that I've seen on this side of the country have often been rusted to death. Can you take a ride to see it?

Looks like a pretty decent vehicle for running those mountain roads and trails in the Phoenix and Prescott area. I don't think it has AC. I wonder what the total mileage is on the unit. I would say not to bad for $3500.00 unless it is all wore out.

These usually go for about $1,800 on GovLiquidation.com, but then you have the hassle of getting them registered.
I don't think any of these came with A/C. This one appears to be in better shape than the usual ones the Gov sells, so it must have had some work done to it. These are normally low miles trucks since if they went overseas they were just left there. That means this was probably just used here for training. These cost far less than the HUMVEE, but they are also far less complex. |

These are sold every now and the at government auction. The engine is the 6.2 GM diesel and makes a good replacement for work out ones in old SuburbAns which also used them till 91 I think. I've thought about getting one but most ive seen have been wrecks. They usually have lowish miles but have been battered around on military maneuvers. As for being driven on the freeway. I guess that's true but they are not byway cruisers. The mpg's sound in line with what the contemporary diesel Suburbn owners claim if they are driven carefully.

Doesn't look bad at all. That would be a decent price up my way. Simple, no-frills work truck. Vinyl, no carpet, manual windows. Hose it out when the muck gets to deep. Fuel mileage claims are right where my 6.2L Suburban 4x4 was. The 6.2 gets kind of a bad rap but I beat the hell out of mine and never had any issues. The mil-spec one is a little more robust.

I've dealt with a few like this in the military. Decent trucks. Geared for offroad. They will do highway speeds, but you have to spin the motor pretty high for it. On-road handling is not great, but they are great once you get off pavement.

3spd automatic trans IIRC.
I seem to remember getting one to 60 or 65mph on the highway, and it would do that all day, but with the tires/suspension/weight - it was by no means luxurious. I've be very surprised if any of those came with A/C (none of ours, or their bretheren GM trucks did) -John

I've never seen a CUCV with aircon. The generation after that (basically a '93 GMC 2500 painted green) didn't either. The LSSV that followed does have AC.

I can't tell from the crappy pics. Would that thing have manual hubs or is it full time or auto 4wd?
Highway manners don't matter much. I'd use it mostly on back roads and for pulling stumps and hauling feed and stuff. 3 speed? really? I called him yesterday and left a message. No reply yet.

After expanding the picture, it looks like manual hubs. Between the line that seems to run across the hub and the squared look to it, that would be my guess.
Manual hubs are more durable as well, so it would make sense for them to be military spec. I loved my old K5 blazer, great truck. Parts were cheap and plentiful. Was not an ideal highway vehicle, mostly due to the short wheelbase...and possibly the fact that I lifted it... My experience with the 6.2 was not as rosy, but I may have gotten one that had been poorly taken care of. (the 6.2 came in a used mason dump that I picked up from an shop I was unfamiliar with) Others have assured me that the 6.2 is a pretty reasonable engine.

Haven driven one overseas, I will attest that yes, it has low miles. It's likly spent a thousand hours or better idling to provide warmth to some troops on radio duty, and to keep the batterys charged. It's also had plenty of offroad time. The vinel will stick to your legs when it's hot out. The top has likly either spent years being "off" or it's never been removed. When it's removed, you get good airflow. When the top is off, its always going to smell musty.
That said... It's a GREAT heavy duty 3/4 ton chassis, and SIMPLE. Parts are plentiful, and easy to work on. It will do more then what most will ever ask of it, and deserves a good owner. ~Nate
