the soundproofing on cars is so good now it might not sound like much with the quality of the sound systems today!

Oh yes ,Ive personal seen this on a ford of the 80s ,a friends cousin kept riding the car with bad brakes on the frt until it looked like the pictures,we could tell he was drivng up the street just by the noise,it was a good laugh but very unsafe for him ,take a coffee can and throw in a bunch of bolts ,close the lid and tow it behind your car ,WhaaLaaa youve got the sound,he would of got a nice ticket for an unsafe car if stopped.
Another story was One very intersting ride into Houston with the same set of friends we came across a sight ,a smoke trail infrt of us while drivng up the frwy got us intrigued .The smoke screen, once we got up to it was a car with its engine and exhaust cherry red hot underneath ,so much so it was glowing the ground much like the glow lights kids put under their show rides. It was amazing the car was still driving ,and behind the wheel was a little old man .Im sure he was saying "comon old girl just 3 more miles".

That is a GM brake assy. I've seen that a couple of times on the GM J bodies (Cavalier, Sunfire/Sunbird).

I worked on one a year or so ago, rotor looked the same as this one. Except the caliper piston finally came out of the bore and had shattered. Customer complaint: no brakes.... I can't remember what kind of car it was.

The last time I saw this was on the rear of a Ford "dually". Customer complaint: brakes scrubbing....

Some people are really that oblivious (or stupid!) when it comes to their automobile.

one of my favorites was about 27yrs ago.middle of the winter and down the street comes a late 70's dodge aspen and as it came to the stop sign in front of my dads shop on the snow the front wheels were locked up.just thought they underestimated the ice,but when they took off the wheels just stayed locked up all the way down the street.typical of the dodges with the phenolic caliper pistons.

Contrary to this thread..

My 190E has two or three sets of rotors and four sets of pads within the past 6 years, none of which were due to surpassing minimum thickness levels.

Rotors mostly to warping and just not being driven or ****ty quality.

It's understandable that many folks were unaware of brake issues in the early days of disc brakes, as cars were equipped with steel wheels and hubcaps and wheel covers...didn't offer much in the way of visual inspection, unless you were willing to remove the wheels or crawl under the car.

Nowadays, most vehicles are factory-equipped with alloys, and most wheels allow some visual inpection of the condition of the calipers and rotors.

Regardless, some folks will always ignore issues, not matter how severe. I've looked through books containing photos of grotesque medical conditions, and wonder just how bad does something have to get before you get the urge to seek medical attention?

Just want to say, I have seen this and much worse in my last 28 years in our shop. Had a car come in (young collage girl) that had no brakes. Both front rotors looked like the one from post 1. Both rear brake rotors were so thin that they had broken loose from the center hub. We had more problems with the father than we did with the car. We needed to replace all 4 rotors, all 4 calipers, both front hubs and bearings. I forget what the estimate was but the father flipped out. Said he had never paid more than $100 for a brake job and I think we quoted over $800. After we showed him all the parts and explained that he was lucky his daughter was still alive he agreed that we had given him a fair price. He did mention that it was wasted money because he was going to kill his daughter and she wouldn't need the car anymore.
Had an 83 300SD come in not too long ago that both front rotors were broken loose from the hub. Car had very poor brakes (rear only). At first inspection, we didn't see the problem on the front brakes as the pads and rotors looked good. We assumed it was a fluid problem but it was full, so must be a master cyl problem. I put my helper in the car, raised it and had him pump the brakes which had a good peddle as I tried to bleed them. All went well. So I turned the hub and then noticed that the disk didn't turn. Boy I felt dumb. We looked again very carefully and saw that the rotor was broken loose from the hub. It was not obvious at the first inspection. By the way, there was some damage to the front of the car that it didn't have the last time we saw it.

With cars and customers, anything is possible.

Paul

OK then, what are those rivet-y looking things on the back of the pad??

I don't pretend to be an ASE master mechanic, but those things sure look like riveted pads.
