I want to say it's not real. There would be no brake pad or backing left at all.

i actually had one in my dads shop worse then that.it was on a pinto.college girl came home on break and dad brought her car in for a weird clunking in the left front wheel when we took off the wheel it looked just like that BUT the caliper had a death grip on the outer rotor and the center hub would spin just fine.

I've seen similar things in the salvage yard. It may actually have been on Pintos too. A long time ago. I wondered if the bad rotor caused the accident that put the car in the yard.

There is no possibility of the outboard piston extending anywhere near the amount necessary to wear the rotor to that degree. Furthermore, if you look carefully, the DB turned the rotor to a diameter that is a bit smaller than the inside diameter of the pad. |

I've seen one falling apart. But it was non vented, and the edges were ground to an edge.

A friend of mine let the front rotors of his F150 get that bad.

It looks like the caliper had jammed a long time ago & was only working on one side of the disk. The cast iron disk is no match for the steel backing plate. Like you, I have seen badly worn disk rotors on junk cars. Normally the rotors crack along the sides of the radial flutes & the wedge shaped pieces fall out. The brakes grab badly when this occurs. I saw a Celica with disks missing many pieces. Eventually the piston comes out too far & does not retract. This jams the rotor & stops the car suddenly. On the W123 with solid disks, the disk can crack around the inner part that attaches to the hub & then no braking. Those who doubt the pic probably just lack seeing extream situations like this.

If you lost the soft material on the outer pad I believe this could result. On the ford calipers I saw in the yards usually the kiss of death was stuck pins on the floating caliper.
