Man may have urinated in city reservoir....

...City will drain 7.5 million gallons of water…

Quote:
The urine poses little risk — animals routinely deposit waste without creating a public health crisis — but Shaff said he doesn’t want to serve water that was deliberately tainted.

Normal human urine is actually sterile and a mild disinfectant.

That is really dumb. According to the article, it's even dubious whether he was even able to hit the water.

Not 7.5 million... 38 million. That's a lot of water. Way too much to waste. Wonder how it could be transported. I can think of some local farmers that wouldn't mind over 100 acrefeet of water...

One has to wonder about open reservoirs for post treatment water. Who thought that was a good plan?

Humans have immune systems for a reason, you know. If a few people with weak immune systems croak from intestinal bugs, then it will improve the species.

Sadly, Feddle-meddle regulations are requiring that cities build covered reserviors in future, at great cost, to pander to the immunocompromised minority (who could as well boil water for themselves).

BTW - until the mid-90s, a lot of NYC's drinking water was stored in an open reservoir in Central Park. Didn't hear of anyone getting ill from it.

In 1911 im sure it was very decent. I think theres more under the surface here, everyone is exclaiming about how wasteful this is, without considering that the same exact thing is done every 6 months to clean the basins anyway, and its not like the water is destroyed. Its returned right back into the ecosystem. Since 1911 this has been going on. Probably to water and power people, this is the same as dumping a dixie cup of water, but to the rest of us the numbers are mind boggling

Wikepedia describes the reservoir as two halves of a rectangle, one stands empty, one is used, and they switch every half year.

Plus the article says the city is switching to underground tanks currently anyway. Im wondering if its two things, one, a stunt to demonstrate the importance of going forward with the underground project. Kinda like "look people, kids can piss in the water supply after treatment, what else can happen?", or since its apparently so easy to drain and swap holding reservoirs, the decision was made to do it before the video went viral locally and the inevitible lawsuit against the city happened because "my kid drank piss".

Im betting if these kids were caught with no video, nothing woulda happened.

I'm certainly familiar with the concept of the immune system, and generally favor using it. However, I'm just a bit concerned about the "post treatment" part of the layout. Am I to believe that the city is obtaining water from whatever source, treating it however it is they have deemed necessary, and then storing it out in the open, susceptible to whatever come what may? Wouldn't that pretty much negate the treatment process? Making the whole thing a huge waste of money, time, and manpower?

There might also be concerns regarding bio-terrorism or bio-warfare, but that's another topic altogether.
