Thumbs down Windows 8.1

Dear god its horrible. I got a new Asus with it and its awful. Next week I'm going to have my friend load windows 7 onto it.

That being said the new Asus with an Asus screen is just a meh experience. It lacks the pop of Apple's Retina display. The computer itself was not set up as flawlessly as an Apple product out of the box and required my buddy to download some drivers and stuff to make it work properly. It still gets funky once in awhile, although I suspect that's windows 8.1 doing crap.

All and all I'm not to thrilled with it, this will be my last PC I'll probably trade it for a 27in Imac. My only regret is that I spent a grand on it, should have coughed up the extra $1,500 for an Imac.

My old HP started to die but it was a very good computer, with the ASUS I feel like I wanted a new Lexus LS600 and got a CPO E350 that needs new tires instead.

8.1 isn't that horrible -- it's just Win 7 with an ugly start menu and ability to run mobile craplets built in. Can generally be fixed with software that allows running craplets on the desktop and adds a proper start menu.

i haven't gotten around to redoing my 8.1 machine yet, but I agree. There are ways around it in 8.1 but I think I'll be putting 7 back on my machine as well.

Knocking the latest version of Windows has become a fine american tradition. Truth is they all sucked and always will. Consumerism is a waste. They probably make a pill for that.

Except 7, xp and 98 were all great OSs that don't really get knocked.

I have Toshiba laptop w/8.1. Freezes more often than not. I found out the OS is made to use almost exclusively Windows/MS everything.

Bing works good but Google search won't open most ad links....with Firefox.

IE is the ticket from what I've read...which is Windows/MS.

I've got Windows 8.1 on three machines at home. All of which are running the Classic Start menu program to get rid of the touch UI thing.

No negative experiences so far, no freezing, no browser problems. Everything works normally/as expected.

Windows 8.1 is actually a good operating system underneath the metro UI crap. I'd take it over 7 if I had the option.

All three of my installations are paired with i7s or hex/octo core AMD processors and a solid state drive.

Sometime this winter i'll be building my own machine. I'll most likely be using Windows 7 64-bit.

MS seems to come out with a turkey and then follows up with something decent historically:

Win 95 - oops, Win 98
Win Vista - oops, Win 7
Win 8.x - oops, Win ?...

Windows 10 is due out early to mid next year I believe. From what I've heard it seems like it will be good.
