one of my favorite sportscars (of all time ~ 20th century) was the Ferrari 288gto from 84 85. it was a midengined car, that really didn't look like a mid engine car. That Loong hood makes you think its traditional front engine.

From a real world perspective these cars are not meant to sell. They are meant to pull you into the showroom so the salesperson can put the hard sell on you for a new Impala.

GM is in the business of selling cars, but they can't sell you one if you are not there to hear their pitch. So the old saying is the husband drags the wife along to look at the Vette and the wife winds up driving out in a new station wagon.

But the upside to those who truly enjoy such cars? They are normally sold at a loss since they are seen as another form of advertising. This allows the true customer to drive something that might cost twice as much if they were buying from a company that has to sell each sports car at a profit.

Ha! Well I could see a mid engine edition for 2019 or further as the c8/c9 is under development...no crystal ball here. Probably also a hybrid platform to keep up with competition. No way for the c7 platform though, and doubt it has anything in common with the cien. I'm hoping those renderings are close though, that looks good.

I tried to explain this (loss Leader) scheme to an old manager at the last company I worked for who had bought himself a chevy SSR retro pickup.
He was harping that GM made good money on them, and that they would be a solid collectable for the future - the latter perhaps-even though its totally impractical for anything other that heading to the golf course.

The whole "pickup" was subbed out to ASC- the company that used to be American Sunroof Corp.
frp bodys like that can be whipped out for 1/3 of the regular price-by a company specialized in that, but having a whole vehicle designed and built by a sub company gobbles up way more than any profit.
ASC has its plant right across the street from the GM plant and they just rolled completed chassis with their drivetrains over to ASC who did the other half

GM doesn't want to make the Corvette a $200k mid engine super car, that's not the point.

GM's to busy returning to profitability to make a money losing halo car, maybe, maybe I can see Cadillac doing it but that's a stretch.
