Well at least the Swedes have enough sense to take necessary action. America will probably never, collectively have that much common sense. If it happens that will be wonderful because it will mean that we have gotten past the insane level of political correctness that is holding our country hostage.

I hope the USA never again resorts to involuntary servitude.

Why is it that the most fervent proponents of military draft are little old men far too old to be subject to it?

What do you think corporate employment is?

I clearly remember the debate over dumping the draft.

Those that were for it were mostly World War 2 vets that were quick to tell you, "I had to go so you should, too."

There's not much logic in that statement.

Those that wanted the draft gone were those who had led troops in Viet-Nam. They had seen the difference in those who were motivated by what the military had to offer and those that didn't want to be there.

And the facts were the Draftees were bogging down the others. Bear in mind that it only takes a few out of many to screw things up. Just because someone was drafted didn't mean they would be a Sad Sack. But the Sad Sacks tended to be Draftees.

Toss in that fewer people are needed to fight a war now and suddenly you have no reason to have everyone clothed, fed, cared for, transported and given VA care. That's a lot of money saved.

When the first laser guided bombs made carpet bombing obsolete the handwriting was on the wall. With no need to drop hundreds of bombs on a target with a fleet of aircraft there was also no need for thousands of people to maintain the fleet.

So why feed, care for, etc., the Draftee's when they were no longer needed?

So the question is: Are they needed today by the US? If so then why?

I'm probably in the minority here with my views, but I support the draft. I'm 29 - so most of my friends are between 25-35 years of age.

Two-thirds of them are good people - hard workers putting in their time day in and day out. Some went to college, some went to trade schools, and some are self taught. The work hard because they're "grown-up" and know nothing comes without hard work.

The other third... Lazy, un-motivated, not willing to "grow-up", and unwilling to learn a skill. I've got a number of 27-30 year old friends who are jumping from low wage job to low wage job because "the management didn't like them"! Drafting these guys would give these guys something to do with their lives, while at the same time teaching them skills.

A really good friend of mine actually just got discharged from the Army about a month ago after enlisting 3.5 years ago. He hadn't a clue what he wanted to do with his life, no skills, lived with his mom and was jumping from low-wage job to low-wage job. The old "burger-filpper" extraordinaire! His parents both convinced him to enlist, so off he went. Basic training, then postings in Asia and Europe; while he discovered he had a thing for nursing. Fast forward to now - he's got skills he can use, but most importantly he GREW-the-f-UP. Something that I wish that quite a few of my other friends would do...

A majority of those old men already served ..not sure they are all "little" I am sure you would have made your DI proud back in the day P.C.

I could not imagine how the service would entertain a platoon going through boot camp comprised of numerous snowflakes ...

I was a victim of that involuntary servitude in July 1968 even before the lottery. Not EXACTLY a victim because I volunteered, but we're it not for the draft I certainly wouldn't have been volunteering. In my cas it served me well, but for the vast majority it was bad news.

I don't think that drafting and forcing into combat is such a wonderful thing, but some variation thereof, might very well serve some young citizens well, or give a non-citizen the opportunity to legally become one.

This^^^^^^^

And... Some of those "little old men" even at the age of seventy could pin a young punk to the wall and put the hurt on him. I remember some years ago reading or hearing on the news about some bandito's somewhere in Central America boarding a tour bus with intentions to rob the tourists. The "tourists" quickly overpowered the bandito's and got control of them. They held them until the police arrived and the police were very appreciative. The bandito's received some damaged heads in the process. Turned out the tour group was a group of Army veterans with an average age well over 70.

Be all you can be!

Yes, I fully expect that anyone thinking that corporate employment is the same as military service, even VOLUNTARY military service has OBVIOUSLY never served in the military.
