OK Going in to Cataract specialist on 20th, He is top man in the field.. he will most likely do right eye that day and left at 1 month later.. Can anyone give me FB on Recovery time/issues? |

I've had cataract surgery in both eyes.
The prep was a nuisance, but required. 3 or 4 different kinds of eye drops daily for a week or so before the surgery and the same for about a month following. Your surgeon may not be as anal about the eye drops. The surgery itself is a piece of cake. You're in and out in no time. The biggest problem is what "might" occur down the road. People who've had cataract surgery are more prone to experiencing torn/detached retinas. This happened to the first eye I had cataract surgery on. The tear occurred about 5 yrs. after the cataract surgery. It was treated in-house by an opthamologist - back-of-the-eye-surgeon. Your cataract surgeon is a front-of-the-eye-surgeon. A few months later another tear was found. That was about a year ago and so far, all is well. Tears can usually be treated in-house with either laser(heat) - not fun or cryotherapy(cold) - much more tolerable. Detached retinas are far more serious - you go to a hospital for surgery to repair that problem Hoping my other eye holds up better.

I had the surgery in both eyes 8 years ago. I made the mistake of choosing "mono-vision"- one eye implanted for reading and the other for distance. It worked great for a few years and I was completely glasses-free. Then things changed and my close-up distance shrank from about 18 inches down to about 6 inches from my face. Correction with contacts and glasses was not an option.
About 3 months ago I had a "piggyback" lens implanted over the lens in the close-up eye to correct it for distance to match the other eye. All's well now, I wear readers when I need to. In all three surgeries it took about three days for vision to normalize for glare, halos etc. Very easy. Be sure to follow your doc's pre and post-op drop protocol carefully, and I'd stay away from mono-vision if I were you.

If you've ever taken alpha blockers fior BPH, let your doctor know, as these drugs affect your irises. The effects can last many years, even if you discontinue use.
