Just overheard my parents talk about the death of their car.

It's a 2007 Civic base model. It's bottom end exploded, literally a hole in the block. I always wondered if they ever changed oil, checked it, or topped it off in that thing and now I know. Just ran it until till it crapped itself.

Ok it's murder if we are being honest, they killed it.

Now the only car available is my 300SDL, never thought it would come down to this. NO I DON'T trust them to even fill it with fuel and will NEVER let them do so.

Welp my life got complicated.

Send your car on holiday for a good few days . You will be sorry you let them use it . And you will blame them for every little mark you find after .

Huh, you read me well.

Their Honda was CLEAN and straight when they first got it.
Now it's riddled with countless dents and dings from car doors, and shopping carts, they grocery shop in peak time.

Us being petrol heads, we'll shop in slow times and park as FAR AWAY from everyone else as possible. If I advised them to do just that they'd blatantly scorn me and tell me to pretty much F off.

I'm sorry, they'll get to where they need to go, but they will NEVER get behind the wheel of it. All previous cars they owned they've destroyed and battered.

This won't be the next one

the saying of Hondas and toyotas run forever and dont require maintenance lead to such.

I know a person who bought a corolla new in 08, its now 9 years old and has 100K but that car is a literal pile of junk as oil changes only occured if they had a discount coupon of jiffy lube, tires were bought at the used tyre shop, brakes were done with the cheapest stuff at Autozone and installed by the hawking mechanic service next to the taco truck in autozones parking lot (rotors are now razor thin and chipping off)

It now has transmission issues (doesnt apply 1st till it warms up) - and all wheel bearings have been howling for a year. AC has been out for 2 years now.

BUT

according to him - toyotas are bulletproof man - they dont require work.

Sad. It's sad that some people don't understand the basics of automotive maintenance. They run 'em until they drop.

Awhile back, a customer of a local import repair shop brought her mercedes in for service. She hadn't changed the oil in 50,000 miles. The engine was puking so she tried to blame the repair shop. She became so belligerent they had to ask her to leave the premises. people.

Hilarious, these are the same people who never go to the dentist for regular cleanings. When every tooth is rotting and falling out of their head, they show up at the clinic as an EMERGENCY.

I did this with a little Honda Civic I got for $200 with a bad starter. I wanted something to drive back and forth to work before I had a company truck. Never changed the oil in 30k miles. I only did the outer tie rod because the wheel would have fell off. I spent $30 on it in junkyard parts and the only real money spent was filling it up with gas once a week. Had fun with it too. Bounced the rev limiter in it all the time as soon I started it up in the morning. I junked it when the clutch went from age and my abuse and by that time the car paid itself back. It still ran but had developed a bad tapping. I didn't give a damn about.

In your parents case, that's a shame. It was a newer and good car.. I could understand if it was a 93 civic jalopy like mine.

Hondas don't die easy. They must have really hated that car. Poor thing...

Ill 2nd the Honda comment.Dads first commutter was the cvcc ,from purchase it carried him for 12 yrs .Being a very thrifty man he rolled up his sleeves and told me to be prepared to learn a little about the combustion engine.I went along with it and a few weeks later we had the old 4 banger back in running order.I remember it was a dinglberry job and some new rings got the compression up to factory, seemed like you couldnt kill the trans ,absolutely bulletproof.H.S. car then sold it but instantly missed it.

I feel for you man. It's a tough road ahead of you. Somehow your parents need to become aware of some basic realities of car care. Doling out tough love is difficult when it's parent we're talking about.

I agree that the SDL is not a good choice for them. Another Honda is needed and done right this time.

cmac2012,

As TOUGH & well-designed as the 300SDL is, it doesn't take well to lack of regular maintenance.
(My last SDL was a total loss, when wrecked while parked by a drunk driver but it still ran fine w/400,000 miles.)

Have your parents considered an armored car or an APC for daily commuting? - A M113 will take lots of battering & keeps on keeping on.
(CHUCKLE)

yours, tex

I agree. May God have mercy on my soul but I ruined an OM617 ('81 300SD) by running it semi low on oil (bottom line of dipstick), normally wouldn't be a problem but I was doing a lot of work in the Oakland hills and of course, drove up and down them. I found out after experiencing the dreaded 'hard knock' (first time in my life) that the rubber neck that extends from the inner oil intake tube down to the bottom of the oil pan was badly torn where it meets the metal pipe - about 3/4 of the way around, it was dangling slightly. My theory is that while aimed up hill the metal pipe was sucking air.

I watch things very carefully on my new car. Should take the lower oil pan off and look at the rubber extender thingy. Not sure the OMM603 has a similar setup to the 617 in that regard. I'll take a look soon.

FWIW, it is the parents of Father of Giants at question here, but no big.

I've basically taken over maintenance of my parent's vehicles. Only way to ensure that they're reliable and safe.
