Does an apartment have the authority to tow in this situation?

Ok, so I'm going to be making a bigger driveway at my house and tearing up so I have to move one of my cars because I don't have enough room to park everything at my house in the backyard and front lawn. I have a local apartment complex near me that my buddy lives in and I was going to move one of my cars in front of his complex. It's got an NJ inspection on it, and has no registration while I'm finishing work on it to sell to my girlfrined. I was thinking of driving it there and just putting a car cover on it. It's two miles from my house so I can check on it every day and keep him have an eye on it.

They don't have the authority to lift a car cover do they and tow it? I was going to have him say it was his if it got a notice on it, but I don't know if they can legally lift a car cover which I doubt. Anyone have experience with this?

I'd suggest talking to the management about it. If it is your friend's dedicated space I'd think he'd have the right to let you use it. Here if I get someone parking in my reserve space, private paid parking I have to call the police, They always come promptly and will put a large orange sticker on the car. It's a real pain to remove and I have never found anyone get two of them. If its not gone in four hours they will have it towed but i do not personally have the right to have them towed. They only will do it for the owner of the lot.

I hardly ever have exercised this right. Once when I did it was a tenant's car but parked in the wrong space.

If you are parked there illegally anyway, you will have a tough time making a case that it was illegal for them to lift a car cover if they do check for a sticker. What are you going to do, call the cops and say your illegally parked car was towed from a private lot because they lifted a car cover illegally and you want the tow charges paid? You will give them a good laugh at the most.

take you chances or put the car in a paid lot.

Very much state dependent.

Here in Maryland, any car with plates but without a valid registration sticker can be impounded at any time, whether it's parked on public or private property.

Pretty much true wherever you are. If you park on someone else's property, they can tow you cover or no. And if the car isn't registered, they can make it tough for you to reclaim. I used to have responsibility for a lot on a commercial property. I would show no mercy. How much do they charge for a spot? You're stealing their services.

If you have relatives or friends who own a home and you won't have any legal issues parking in their property, that would be the better solution even if it is a bit farther away.

How long do you need to use additional parking space?

Somebody I used to know asked me before if he could park his W140 at my apartment complex, so I talked to the manager and we came to an agreement as long as he paid for that spot while he used it, and I had the keys to it in case I had to move it, there were no questions asked. It had a car cover too and it was in an enclosed garage parking (gated).

I think this is a great idea, but unfortunately the OP in this case is willing to drive an unregistered and likely uninsured vehicle 2 miles down the street on public roads in order to illegally park it at his friends housing complex while attempting to conceal it with a car cover and a cover story that his friend owns it, all to save a few bucks on storage fees.

I don't think asking permission and offering compensation was in the cards.

some of these public storage facilities take in cars, boats and RVs for both short term and long term rentals. They are locked behind a well lit fenced area.

Looked into that recently for one of my vehicles. They want the vehicle registered and insured which I don't understand why. I can understand the insurance if a vehicle were to get stolen or damaged, but registration? Even then, I shouldn't have to insure the vehicle to be on their lot because they have insurance. I laughed at them. It's sitting in a storage unit for a reason. Most of the cars there haven't seen the road in 12 years or more according to inspection stickers and they really think the owners kept them registered and insured?

How did your little stealing a parking space scheme work out?

Well, considering there's no assigned parking at this place, I "stole" it like a thief in the night.

I rent-to-own a house in a blue-collar suburban area and the apartments nearby usually have people that could could care less about a vacant parking spot with a nice looking Mercedes considering most of the kids in high school in our area are out shooting heroin or doing percosets. I think they have more to worry about than me putting a car in a spot across from my friends apartment that has about 15 open spots and maybe 3 cars in it.

Private property doesn't absolve you from having to have valid registration in most cities/municipalities. I have a fenced in lot at a factory we own and I had cars with no tags, I got a letter from the city that I could not have any non-registered vehicles stored outside. Private, commercial property, but within the city limits. I put all cars inside, or in Ohio on stuff over 25 years old you can buy 50 year limited use registrations for $25 so I just registered a lot of them. The storage lot is no different, if your unregistered car is parked up against the fence, they start getting letters from the Code Violations Bureau or whomever.
