Rats are like Cockroaches: Everywhere!

On the Georgia Coast this year the deer look like Zomebody transplanted
a bunch of "Key Deer" (Tiny)
[The deer population will expand to the limits of the food supply.]
The Fawns look like Wraiths !

I both heard and saw a confrontation between an Owl and a Crow
Saturday Morning just after False Dawn (Must have been some Vittles
involved) The Crow must have taken the worst of the deal , It was still
flying around "Cawing" angrily 45 minutes later.

Had mice in the house 2 time. My first cat would chase them but do nothing else to them.

The other Cats that were born under my house eat mice and even came up with a Rat. Never saw a Rat here in Long Beach till they got it.

2 Days ago at one in the Morning the neighbors little Dogs (making some odd squealing sound) were going crazy. Went in the Back Yard to see what was going on and a huge Raccoon (like 25 pounds) jumped over my Fence. When I shined the Flashlight on it jumped over the Fence to my neighbors yard.

I put food out for my Cats on top of a 6 foot tall shed last night. They were eating and I went inside a bit. I have been trying to get back out there and bring the food in so as not to attract anything else that eats it including Ants.

Dark night and I went out and shined my light on the top of the shed seeing several pair of eyes glowing back but one pair did not look right. As I got closer it turned out to be a small house Cat sized Raccoon, it ran off.

This is in a hosing tract although 1/4 mile a way is a river bed that if you followed it would take you to the local mountains.

My barn cats avoid coons and skunks, so do the livestock dogs. Both species are among the top vectors of rabies in the CONUS. I tolerate the skunks unless they overpopulate. Raccoons get shot on sight. Foul, bad-tempered, destructive beasts.
Stay caught up on the vax for outside pets.
A citified neighbor moved in and thought it was cute fun to put out kibble for the coons and skunks and occasional fox on her deck overlooking the creek. She and her little citydog would sit inside and watch them through the patio door. One night all the little furry critters suddenly took a powder and vanished. A full grown Mountain Lion sauntered up onto the deck, finished off the food and stretched out for a nap.
Raccoons and skunks that have a constant supply of human-provided food will not teach their young how to forage. More of their young will survive and overpopulation and eventual starvation will result. Anyone feeding wildlife out of concern for the young ones needs to think this through. Feeding wild animals is a bad idea.

I am both part Latino and Hispanic. If you are confused Latinos include Italians. The Ancestors of mine that ended up in the USA came from a village that straddles the Austrian Italian border. In the pic that is supposed to be of my Great Great Grandfather he looks Italian.

He immigrated to Mexico and married my Great Great Grandmother a Mexican but had some kids. She died and he married another Mexican Woman.

Eventually my Great Great Grandfather and his Brother ended up in New Mexico USA around 1898.

No one believes the above because I have an Austrian sirname and I don't speak spanish.

Never seen a Skunk around here. But, in 3 months my near my House has smelled of skunk spray 2 times.

I have been mor pro-active in brining the Cat food in. But, I wistle for my Cats (I feed them seperatly, the 2 fixed femals don't like the large male that chases them).
Last night my wistle seems to have brought the small Racoon. He was on top of the Wooden Fence trying to work his way towards the food. I shined the light on him and hissed, tried barking like a dog but what worked was when I made a deep growling sound and he ran off. All the time I had the light in his eyes so he could not see me.

Cats eyes glow green when the light is on them and the Racoons glow red.
I thought I saw a hint if those read eyes a few minutes ago as I picked up the Cat Food Dishes. But, it was too far away to be sure.

I leave Water outside all of the time and the Raccons? wash stuff in it as there is often dirt in the Water.

Unfotunately the Opossums and Racoons seem to climb as well as the Cats and the ones that are the same size can likely go anyplace a Cat can go.

Can't shoot in the City + there is a Grade School in front of me. Don't what SWAT showing up because I killed a Racoon.

I have a live Trap but I have never taken the time to get it out of the Box.

If I caught something wild I don't know if Animal Control would show up and relocate it or not.

If I caught that large Raccoon I saw and it did not tear up the Trap I could take it down to the River Bed but I would be real uneasy about opening up the Door to let it out.

If you live trap a Skunk how would you deal with that. I mean the Trap, yourself, and or your vehicle could all get sprayed while it is in the Trap.

The Humane Society has free rental live traps (you get your money back when you return the trap). People trap stray Cats and take them in to be neutered or spayed then take them home and release them (you are supposed to lock them I a room for a few days till they recover from the operation).

When they do that the cut the tip of the Cats Ear off so if someone traps them again they don't bring them back in.

That can also means that people sometimes trap someone's pet.

I was taught not to kill things if it was not needed. If I can get a Gopher to come surface (hose and water down the hole) I grab it with a Tongs and put it in a Bucket and relocate it.

If I can get some bug into a Jar or glass I take it out side and release it. The exception is Cockroaches which I instantly kill (they sometimes com a cross the street from the School in front of my house).

Also I don't know about legality about killing wild animals.

We are supposed to have Coyotes in my area that are supposed eat peoples pets. I have never seen one in my area not has someone told me their pet was killed by one. But the important thing is it is illegal to kill them unless of course you are attacked.

I'm not killing anything that is not bothering me.

OTH, possums are almost never rabid. If there are rabid critters running around, you may have a worse problem than a stinky corpse. Make sure your pets are vaccinated. And be cautious about whatever lurks under your house.

I think I would have rigged up a fishing pole with a big hook and sinker and cast for it.
My friend's daughter is a vet and she will dispute the claim that not all rodents carry the rabies potential.

Even though she's a vet, she knows that some of these rodents are killers. her attitude is framed by the fact that a possum once killed one of her favorite puppies while it was playing in the yard chasing a butterfly.

It's important to understand that non-domesticated animals maintain feral primal instincts

'possums are not rodents. They're marsupials.

Also I searched and found that a possum will almost never bite unless cornered. They also are unlikely candidates for rabies as their body temp is about 94 degrees, too cold for the rabies virus(?) to prosper.
