Handicapped parking is awesome!

My inlaws were here over the weekend. Among the things they brought with them were handicap tags! For five days I never had to search for a parking spot! I can't wait till I get one in about 40 years time.

Believe me you don't want to pay the price of membership. People calling you crip, some women think that you are less of a man, endlessly scoring on top of a promotion list and being passed over etc...

there was a Carl Hiaasen book where some lowlife's racket was making fake handicapped tags! the whole premise sounded outrageous but then it makes you think, specially after seeing all the parking benefits

No, I actually hope I don't have to hang one of those tags off my rear view mirror. My poor old Father in Law can't even get in and out of his car without his knees creeking and cracking. But it was fun... go to the mall, just pull in. Restaurant parking lot full? No problem

Heh.. I felt special.

My wife wants me to use that priviledge for the time being while I am recovering and she has to drive me to work (fortunately, we both work in the same building).

Sorry, but hernia operation or not, I think that's immoral. Things aren't THAT difficult as far as getting in and out of the vehicle, and I certainly wouldn't classify my discomfort anywhere near those that truly have handicapped issues!

Besides, I need the exercise...

So I grunt a little and count my blessings.

I may be starting something here, but in my opinion I think when people turn 70 they automatically see those spaces as "their" private parking spaces!

I have seen way too many non-handicapped older people abusing those spaces.
One of my main peeves as well...

as much as i can't stand to see a non-handicapped person take a designated spot, i have another pet peeve. too many handicapped spots and none used! my office, home depot and costco are a few that come to mind. i just hate circling the lot endlessly when there are rows of handicapped parking just staring at me

That is odd! Sometimes I spend several minutes circling Costco and Home Depot looking for a vacant disabled person parking slot. I guess it must depend on the area where you live.

I don't need to use my tag all the time, but when I need it, it is useful. However, it is only a MINOR asset in doing shopping when you have a disability, and in no way is it worth the price of admission. Trust me on that one.

My pet peeve is the people that use the slots for parking their shopping carts - means someone has to move them before they can be used, which is tough if the disabled person is in a wheelchair or needs a walker.

Also, some people shove 4-8 carts in between the cars parked in disabled parking. That means the person in a wheelchair or walker has to try and move the carts before they can get in their car. This is impossible if you are in a manual wheelchair that needs both hands to operate - how do you grab the carts to pull them back out of the slots?

On one occassion I helped 2 people remove carts that were placed between slots against a van. Never mind the dings and paint scratches - they were jammed against the electric lift so hard that it took some puzzle solving to free the cart from the lift. (BTW, both of the other people were disabled - no one else even offered to help. Sad.)
