Better sound with MP3's?
I have an Mp3 player in the benz and would like to know how to make the mp3 files sound better? When I burn the cd, I make a playlist file in Winamp and I play around with the equalizer in the program then save the file but I dont hear no difference. The music does not sound as good.
I want to make it sound more "surround" like the way the new windows media player does using the SRS wow effects that Microsoft has put in. That is the type of sound I would like to "taylor" the mp3 cd files to because the way they play now are "as is when downloaded" and I always look for the best quality file. Can anyone help me out?

The EQ doesn't affect the recorded signal...it just tailors the output signal to your PC. That's why it still sounds the same when you save it.
The SRS Wow effect does the same thing...tailor the output signal, but leaves the original music untouched. You need to purchase additional software to actually have the ability to add effects to your material. Quality and desired results are consistent with cost. Sonic Foundry, Emagic, and Cakewalk make software to do what you are looking for. Understand that MP3 is a compressed form of music reproduction, so your signal is not as good as the sampling rate of CD-quality digital. So if your source material is less than optimum, any enhancements you add will only do so much...might even make it worse...

If the tunes are ripped at 128K, it's not going to sound much better than a decent FM radio station in the car. More bits, better sound, larger files . . . If you really care about the sound, don't go below 198K

Using a quality ripper, such as LAME/EAC makes a huge difference in the quality of the MP3's.
I've a substantial collection of mp3's on a 20 gig portable player in my car, and it's very obvious which songs were not encoded very well - they all have that mp3 hiss. The stuff I encoded myself and the albums I've downloaded that are encoded well sound quite reasonable with no hiss. |

If you're looking for these 'WOW' effects in your car, you can only really get it with a top-of-the-line head unit with digital sound processing etc that'll do these effects. Yamaha AV amplifiers (home ones) do some awesome 'wow' effects that are natural sounding and bring life to music in the way you want.
