"stars and bars" GONE from GA state flag!!!
finally!!! the "stars and bars" from the confederate flag are to be removed from the GA state flag after MUCH debate!
the state house and senate FINALLY approved a new flag totally devoid of the the confederate symbol of the "stars and bars" this has been the biggest issue of this years session. the dumbasses were still fighting over the flag when they couldn't even get a balanced budget finalized. it was a personal issue of the new gov to get the old flag with the full size stars and bars back flying above the capital. i couldnt be happier that he lost and the old flag is most likely gone forever! maybe we will all get shoes next year! :p one happy white boy, - benton |

Woohoo!!
I have a feeling that others will disagree, but I'd prefer it if the stars n' bars disappeared off of the face of the earth...IMHO it has racial connotations for too many people, even though there are those who feel that it's a symbol of a culture... |

The flag flap is finally over? Thank goodness. Personally, I think they should have gone back to the flag that was in place in the mid 50's. Unfortunately our state is spending millions of dollars to make these changes to the flag and you can bet our elected officials are not paying for it out of their own pockets. We already changed it once in the past couple years now we are going to do it again. I pretty much agree with ThrillBilly concerning the issue of the politicians worrying about the flag when they can't even balance the budget.

I am glad to see anyone or anything that prohibits, implies or denies fellow humans to be free people gone forever. |

Here is another point to ponder...
well, actually a few.
Gov. Perdue stated all through his election campaign that the choice of the flag should be left up to the PEOPLE of Georgia, he didn't say anything about the ELECTED OFFICIALS making that choice for us. And as far as choice goes, no, the Stars and Bars won't even be on the list. Former Gov Barnes changed the flag without a state-wide vote and still it does not satisfy some people due to having the Stars and Bars depicted, along with the other flags that have flown over Georgia. Will the "outlawing" of this flag be the start of changing history? I am referring to Stone Mountain Memorial Park just outside of Atlanta. Memorial Hall is a museum in the park that is filled with artifacts from the Civil War, including the Confederate Battle Flag. There has already been some problems with commemorating the fallen soldiers from this war, American Citizens. Will the carving on the side of Stone Mountain be blasted away just because it depicts the leaders of the Confederacy? Will I have to stop flying my Scottish flag, also a version of the St Andrew's Cross. My understanding is that Mississippi and Alabama have taken their flags down because they too are St Andrew's Cross versions. We should ALL remember the saying, and I can't remember who said it and I'm probably paraphrasing here, "Those who don't remember history are surely doomed to repeat it". I don't mean to ruffle anyones feathers here but I think we have more pressing problems right now that need to be dealt with first.

the "new" flag is based on (similar to) an early confederate flag, but...
for "most" it does not evoke the strong feelings and response that the "stars and bars" do, because it is not recognized as such. i didnt know the new flag is actually based on the early confederate symbol, and frankly dont care. to me it represents a new day in GA, and i will embrace the old "stars and bars" in its proper place: the history books. was the S&B offensive to me? no. did the S&B hold a singular meaning to many? certainly. i am more than happy to relagate the S&B to the history books to promote harmony and a better understanding between citizens. as for parks and museums and such: the carving at stone mtn is in its rightful place, a moment of history frozen in time. you can chose to visit and embrace it or not. you SHOULD proudly display ANY flag that has meaning to YOU on YOUR own property! just dont force me to adopt it, or expect me to embrace it.
