Any recomends on work in SLC? Never trusted Garff since I bought my 190e new in 85 (I ordered it with a 5 speed manual thank god) and they delivered it to me with a dent in the drivers door and pin stripes after I specificly requested in writing that they leave off this dealer installed nightmare. My other benz I bought out of Park Price motors in Pocatello Idaho, much better very small dealer, knows all the customers by name and Carl is a great mechanic that actually likes it when you sneak into the shop and shoot the breeze a bit. Unfortunately, Pocatello is too far for me now.

And the 190E with very minor wear that only I would notice still looks like and runs like new.

I've been pretty pleased with German Car Service, 801-264-9911, 4325 S. 300 West, just off the 45th south exit of the 15. It was the successor to Werner's, which was the most prominent SLC indy for many years. After Werner sold his shop, he got tired of retirement and started this one up. He's passed away, but his son Mel runs it now. $65/hour shop rate, they do good work. I've had my SD in there for a few things, no complaints.

Werner's is also probably fine, but I have no personal experience there. www.wernersmercedes.com.

I've had my 240D for about a year and have taken it to Werners, 3113 S. West Temple, for a new starter, new belts, and oil changes. The guys there are are polite and service-oriented. They've done a good job for me and I intend to continue to take my car there.

MB shops in SLC

I have to agree that German Car Service is a good place.

I have had Werner and now Melvin do my "hard mechanic" stuff (I do my own light service items) since I bought my first Benz from Werner in '77.

I had my 220D (bought from Werner with a rebuilt engine) at the time that Werner sold his old shop to Ron. To be honest I had some problems with Ron's work (wrong parts installed) that Werner straigtened out. Never went there again, just followed Werner to his "newest" shop called German Car Service.

I like the fact that Mel will let you look at what he does if you are so inclined.

Salt Lake City MBZ vintage specialist

MJ Auto Repair off Redwood Road and HWY 80 specializes in older non-computerized 1950-80 Mercedes. Mark is a one man shop with about 50 oldies on his property. He doesn't work on other makes. I found him via a Mercedes shop referral that didn't have the personnel experienced in my mechanical fuel injected 1963 220Seb. He is kind of a Mercedes car nut and will do Mercedes diesel to gas or gas to diesel conversions. Being a one man shop, he readily discusses your problem with you and you can observe his work. If you need a hard to get used part, you might find one on his lot. He also has some 1950-60 restoration possibilities for sale. His labor prices are very reasonable compared to other shops.
