Beaverton, OR indy?
Hey folks,
Since I work, I can never get to my regular mechanic, MBI Motors on SE Hawthorn, unless I have a day off. Are there any reputable shops in Beaverton, Oregon, where I work? I really need an oil change right now, and it would be nice to build a relationship with a non-swindler MBZ shop on this side of town. Any suggestions? Thanks!

MBI is a well respected shop in the community and by MBCA members. I have only had my car their twice, however I know car owners here in the Portland area who have taken their cars there for many years. Sig and his team are top notch. Many of his staff are former dealership mechanics. The dealer does not like to work on older cars, so MBI's shop is usually a busy place.

Do a search of the archives on them and you should find a few posts here.
Bottom line, I recommend them heartily. They have worked on all of my cars for nigh 10 years, and I don't have any complaints. Some have said they are too expensive... I say that good, competent work is never too expensive. Particularly for rather "difficult" or choosy cars that I have or have owned, such as the 6.3, 6.9, 500E, 560SEC, etc. Cheers, Gerry |

In Portland, you have only two choices if you have M100 models while there are numerous choices if the subject is a regular Mercedes. MBI works on all models; the mighty diesel to the 600. Last week they had a Gullwing in a service bay and a 6.3 in another. Diesels everywhere. MBI has mechanics that are pros on certain models.
Burback can handle almost any difficult job. His mechanics are skilled and intelligent. The two best choices are Burback or MBI Motors. Dan Smith, Oregon |

Recommendation for a buyer's inspection in Oregon (North and South)
I'm considering picking up an '89 300TE in Oregon in a couple of weeks when I'm down (from Vancouver, BC) for a conference. Can someone recommend some mechanics who I could trust to do a thorough buyer's inspection, since I'll have to make a pretty quick decision if I want to be able to drive it back (the DHS requires 72h notification before exporting, etc.).
One of the vehicles is in southern Oregon, the others are near Portland. I've picked up on the strong recommendations for MBI in Portland -- what about down south? Any advice appreciated. (advice on deal-breakers would be appreciated too, but that's maybe the wrong forum. This would be my first MB -- I was drawn to it first because of the 3rd row seat, but I'm getting suckered in by the feel of the car -- I'm also worried about buying a money-pit). Cheers, and thanks in advance, --david |

MBI is pretty cool.
For southern Oregon, good luck. Probably the best bet is Crater Lake Mercedes Benz dealership. There is an indy MB shop in Phoenix but I've heard bad things about them, but I guess if it's only for over all inspection you should be fine. |

I have not heard good things about them from the mechanics and parts guys at MBI, whose opinion I trust. They use Metric Motors in SoCal for rebuilt or used engines.
The fact that MBI wouldn't travel less than a mile to this place (local) for their engines, says a lot to me. Cheers, Gerry |

Sunnyside Automotive?
Thanks for the recommendations. DJ, sorry to ask another Portland question, but has anyone used Sunnyside Automotive on SE 152nd? They aren't far from me and I have heard good things from a VW diesel owner.
I need work on the vacuum system (door locks and cruise control) and want to have the glow plugs and injectors checked, possibly replaced. Jerry |

I see a ton of MB's on Tualitian/Sherwood road on the north side. Their parking lot is often just packed full of old MB's...
...anyone know who these people are? I would never take my car to a shop but these guys seem to really move some cars. |

Star Motors In Sherwood
After buying my second mercedes an '88 260E from a good friend I was recomended Star Motors in Sherwood because he had worked on my car since it was brand new. The owner Gunther, I was told, used to work for Rasmussen and is 100% Mercedes trained. Their rates are still around $60 sum dollars/hr and worth every penny, but they might be a bit more now. Being somewhat mechanical and thrifty I like to do some work myself, Gunther and Mike are very helpfull when I need parts and tell me how to fix stuff myself. Mike even told me how to make a tool to fix my brakes. Sometimes this ends up in two days of tears and frustration and a $100 tow bill to their shop but I don't care. lol Even though they are a bit out of town and the rush hour traffic out of Sherwood is less than desireable, I highly recomend Star Motors 503-692-0931. I have recomended a half dozen other Mercedes owners to them and all have good stories to tell and have become diehard clients. Tell them Jimmy sent you. lol
I was treated like gold at Rasmussen many many years ago with my first MB. They rewired one my glow plug installation mistakes then fixed some odds and ends stuff for about $70. I was greatful! MBI has never had the time of day for me. Sorry MBI, your customer service does not get my stamp of approval! As long as I have the means and a breath to breathe I will allways love, trust and own MB to get me around! Last edited by MercedesJimmy; 07-01-2006 at 07:19 AM. |

One thing to consider with independent shops, is not necessarily how current they are with older cars (most are), but how up-to-date they strive to be with newer cars. Are they investing in keeping their mechanics trained and up to date with later model cars (I'm thinking R129s, W210s, W140s, W220s, etc.).
Many of these cars are off warranty now and finding their way into indy shops. Many indy shops don't have the tools, software nor mechanical expertise to properly work on them. A factory-trained tech who left the dealership 10 or 15 years ago, is going to be hard-pressed to be good with newer cars. Just a thought. Cheers, Gerry |
