Service and Parts in Seattle

Hi everyone. I'm an enthusiastic new member who just purchased my first Mercedes diesel yesterday, 1974 240d, 4 spd. manual transmission. It's pretty darn nice. Hoping to pick up new fuel lines and a supply of fuel filters this weekend so I can start running B100.

My only other diesel experience is that I have a 1953 Massey-Ferguson 35 tractor, also pretty darn nice. And I've had other old cars, just not diesel.

I live in Seattle (N. end, Phinney Ridge) and I'd like to form a relationship with a good mechanic and parts supplier sooner as opposed to later, and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations.

Thanks!

For most parts, I have found that online parts merchants beat the socks off local suppliers. In some cases, the dealer is the best bet. Water pumps are a good example. So don't rule the MB dealer out completely.

I completely disagree (no offense, Fastlane ;-). The local suppliers in Portland typically get parts cheaper than online suppliers with less waiting (typically one day for less common parts) and no shipping charges. I've noticed that the catalogs used by online suppliers are actually very similar (if not the same) as those used by locals. However, sometimes there are cases where Fastlane / other online suppliers / dealer are tops... hard to find parts (ex: K1 spring kit) is one example...

I can't help with Seattle new parts suppliers but I'd suggest Aurora Auto Wrecking and Benz Friends for used parts.

If you want a local OEM parts supplier, try MBMW Parts at 8110 Aurora Blvd.

Service - "Benz Friends" He's about a block north of BFI (Boeing Field Airport). They have been there for over 20 years. They work on mostly 70's & 80's cars.

Hm.. I need someone that will service my '92 500E. The trans is just about toast (almos no reverse) and I'm sure it needs a complete overhaul. $5000 at the dealer is more than I'd like to spend but I also need to locate someone who is competent since the trans seems to be the right achiles heel on these cars.

Of course a good fab/racing shop would not be bad to find since ultimatly I'd rathe spend the money installing a 6-speed manual than another slush-box.. but that's just me I suppose... (and the topic for a seperate thread).

Service in Seattle

My recommendation for service is Car Tender.
1706 12th Avenue (Capitol Hill)
324-0345

I've got an eclectic stable and I wanted a shop that had the depth of mechanical experience to work on my 6.3, W124 and W210. These guys are very good.

Appointment times are fairly easy to get (don't call at noon on Thursday and expect to get in on Friday).

If you purchase your parts elsewhere they won't hassle you about that (unless you buy crap parts).

I’ve used Benz Friends and they were/are good. Just a bit too far south for me. I get all my 6.3 related used parts from them.

Ravelli Motors on Aurora is also good. I just found the comfort level with Car Tender great.
