Is the Timing Adjustable on a 16V?
I had new pulleys and a belt tensioner put on my car... The car drives sluggish off the line, a friend of mine suggested its the timing. The mechanic who did the work said "impossible." Is the timing adjustable? Thanks guys...

The ignition spark timing is factory established by a stationary distributer cap...
The valve timing can be off by a few degrees by a worn/stretched timing chain... also afecting ignition spark timing Hope this information helps, thanks. |

There is the vaccum advance built into the distributor and the timing advance via the R/16 resistor if yours is so equiped. On euro 16 valves, the R/16 was a "variable" resistor, switchable to different values which allowed "tuning" to some degree based on the quality of the fuel that was being pumped.

Reason I ask is, the car seems to bog on the lower RPMs, but once you get past 3800 or so, you can floor it, and she'll rev nicely to redline. Below 3800 rpm, it revs better if you only give half throttle. Only complaint I have is, lower RPMs are very sluggish, got worse after the new belts. pulleys and valve adjustment. Suggestions?

there are no hydraulic lifters in the engine, it uses solid lifters for the valves, correct? then you need a valve adjustment. i doubt the chain is stretched.

i had the same problem on my 16V. Check the camshaft timing to make sure they line up! mine was off by 2 teeth on the intake side and 1 tooth on the exhaust. car took a LONG time to move in low rpms.
