I was waiting to throw in that Mercury Marine fact in, I think they made the engine for the current Z06 also. I don't know about the new C6. I was trying to bait pro vette people but no luck yet

Can someone find the list on the 'net and copy and paste it?

Only 'vettes I'd consider would be especially the 57 FI (or any of the FI cars really, I like the 58 to 62's OK, but especially the 57 and any 63 coupe, FI versions in particular. I liked the original Stingray version coupes of all varieties (63 to 67), they really degraded the looks of the car when they took away the split window tho, but I'm sure the general sporting populace hated the vision being blocked to the dead rear like that, but sure added alot to the looks. 68 and newer, very few appeal to me, they were semi-OK before they got rid of the chrome bumpers, after the plastic integrated bumpers, no appeal at all since then. 72 or so I think was the last of the front and rear chrome bumpers. Starting with the 63 Stingrays, I count a coupe ahead of the roadster as being cooler, pretty rare to say that!

I really like the 69 Camaro Z28, very nice look. I dislike the RS and SS versions tho, any that might have the hidden headlights ruins it.

If they are talking "any" car at all, a 32 Ford highboy roadster is hard to resist, but they may only be counting original cars, not hotrods. So much depends on how it's set up (hood vs no hood, fenders vs no fenders vs bobbed fenders, etc etc, but other than a gross color it's damned hard to screw up on a 32 Ford roadster. They looked tough even when stock! I'd lean towards a small block Chevy motor, but the retro looking flathead V8's are toooo cool too!

Just to clear things up about the Corvette being chosen as the #1 car.

They didn't select all vettes, just the '63-'67 version.

I have the magazine at home. It's a great read.

I'm not so sure about MM producing the Z06 motor, on the subject of 'vettes from the "100 Coolest Cars Issue":

I believe you are correct, that Mercury only did the ZR1's engine.

THANKS I'm sure that was alot of effort. I can see this as being a "top 100" list, but hard to put them in any type of order. LOTS of them I'm thinking "WTF! How did THAT make the list???", but there are lots of different tastes out there. Here is my "WTF!" list:

100. Volkswagen Microbus (Split-Window) (A VW bus. Yah right. Yeesh!)
97. Subaru WRX P1 (thhhhpppppppttttttttt)
93. Chrysler 300M Hemi (Is that the new Hemi, the one that's out now? Maybe the 50's version, not this new one)
85. Mini Cooper (Same comment as above, maybe the "original Mini", not the BMW-Mini, nahhh. It's OK, y'know for a new car, but geez this is the TOP100!)
75. 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396(Not a big fan of 69 Chevelles. 66 I think was the nicest year Chevelle. Lot there are a few other of this vintage much better looking, for example the 66-67 Nova was TUFF lookin, and as I mentioned the 69 Camaro.
73. Mazda Miata (Bwaaahahaha, "WHUT!?" Bwaaha ha ha what a joke)
72. Volkswagen Beetle (new or old? Or does it really steenking matter??? No way, no frickin' way, a VW Beetle, new or old, no no no)
67. 1969-71 Mini Cooper (NOT getting what they mean, first they say "Mini Cooper", now THIS, are they double-dippin' on Mini or what. I'd maybe see the early Mini Cooper, what makes the 69-71 so great?)
65. Dodge Viper GTS (Ehhhhh, it's plenty fast, but not that cool in my book, bout the same panache as an Acura supercar, what's that thing called? Who Cares?)(PS Acura NSX. Glad to see it didn't make the list. Only claim to fame is now that it's been in production however many years, that someone such as I might be able to remember what it's called after 10 minutes or so od hard thinking)
56. Volvo P1800 (Cool enough lookin I guess, but top 100 material?)
55. Datsun 240Z (OH YAH, drool drool, thpppppptttttt)
47. Nissan Skyline GT-R (What the hell is THAT?)
39. 1983 Volkswagen GTI (HUH!??)
38. Citroën 2CV (Are these guys on crack or what?)
36. Toyota 2000GT (ummmmm, this IS the COOLEST car list, right?)
31. 1967-68 Chevrolet Camaro SS (As I've made it clear the 69 is better looking. I'd go with a Z28 over the SS any day though, what were they thinking "SS"?)
30. Ford Model B/18 (V-8) (ANY 32 Ford is OK with me)
29. Jeep CJ (OH COME ON!!!!! Why dontcha put the Gremlin on the list too, some guys think those are cool!)
17. Gord GT40 Mark 3 (Supposed to be FORD I know, but still these can't even count, they only made like what 3 or 4 of them, none were street legal anyways (maybe there are others on the list like that) If this is fair, then I vote for that one Indy car with the turbine engine in it). I'd agree the Ford GT (#77) could be on the list though, the GT40 and Ford GT are both pretty cool (not as cool as a 32 Ford though, hee hee)
10. Jaguar E-Type (I wouldn't mind going on record as saying the E Type Jag is butt-ass ugly. May be fast, but not cool. If I were in a race to Deadmans Curve, I'd wanna be in the Stingray)

In regards to #75. Should have been the Chevelle SS 454 LS6

Interesting that they both list the '66 Toronado (I have one) and the Eldorado. Not much different besides the 425 vs 429. GM's Bill Mitchell designed both of them as well...

I actually found that someone else made a list and saved me alot of typing

I actually do like the NSX, certainly wouldn't buy a new one but consider a used from 91 - 93

i really do like the shape, my mech has one and it still turns heads, its quite low and very easy to drive fast...the view when driving fast is amazing due to the low front....i believe honda engineers used the F-16 fighter plane as the inspiration

before all the other cars it used to compete with blew it away in terms of horsepower (it needed a V8 like the Legend)...everytime a mag did tests...the nsx would always be rated as great handling car and come out towards the top of the list if the test was done on a racetrack...for sure it got killed on the drag strip

then again i'm probably more biased because i am a huge Ayrton Senna fan and he helped tune the NSX....this was when Honda dominated F1 with their engines

What I want to know, is why the El Camino is not on the list. It's not just a car, its a lifestyle.

AND ANOTHER THING! WHY is the CJ on the list when the list is for the 100 coolest CARS!!! The ElCamino maybe you could let slip by, to me it's on a car chassis so it's a car with a pickup bed. They're kinda cool, I liked the early ones better when they were based on the fullsize car. I like the 66 because it's a based on the 66 Chevelle and I like that front end. Should done one with the 66-67 Nova and called it something else. Or hoe COOL would a ElCamino be if it were based on the 69 Camaro?!!! TOO cool, that's how cool.
Also the 49 Mercury is on the list, not really a very cool car until it's customized, such as chopping the top, but lots of potential to be cool, but they could have "qualified" that the 49 Merc is only cool if properly prepped.

Look at this:

23. Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic
22. 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

How can a Chevy be cooler than a super rare Bugatti?
I'll take a Lumina over an EB110 please

Yeah, lot's of things don't make sense. I think they wanted to "number" the list to prove it was 100, but the order doesn't make sense. It would vary so much by individual, I don't see how you can "qualify" the coolest. You can't say that #100 is the least-cool car ever made. They'd need a seperate list of the least-coolest. So you also can't discount the 500E being #90 for the same reason.
Another thing that makes little sense is WHY single out the 57 BelAir? I actually prefer the 55 out of the 55 to 57 Chevy range, and for some reason really DISlike the styling of the 56.
LOT's of these cars I can't even comment on, my taste and experience isn't that "worldly". I do know I hate that ugly Citroen 2CV though. That's the kind of car that goes beyond "so ugly it's cute" to something beyond that where it's ugly again (hope that makes sense). Kind of like early 60's Dodges and 1950's era Ramblers. So I discount ANY Citroens on the list. Can someone seriously post an image of a Citroen that comes close to looking "cool"?
It's hard for me to sit down and list what I'd want to see on the list. A few I can think of I didn't notice on the list:
Tucker 48, because I think it IS cool (seen one in person) and for what the company was trying to do, but failed thanks to the Big 3.
Silver Arrow (not the 129 chassis, the Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow, although it is quite rare, kind of falls under the same category as the Ford GT40).
(OK, here's an odd one, coming from me) BMW Isetta, kinda cute, kinda ugly, definitely weird.
ANY car with a V12 or larger, particularly American.
I also kinda like the Chevy Corvair, because Nader never was able to kill it, like everyone thought he did. It was built in an era when it wasn't like the Big 3 to take a chance at something so far out there, but GM did it! And some of them were pretty cool (Monza Spyder Convert for example). I wonder if anyone at one of the Corvair clubs ever thought about asking Nader to come to a national convention? hee hee hee!
GNX. I'm glas to see that on the list, one bright shining cool star in an otherwise drab-ish decade (could include all Grand Nationals as far as I'm concerned). In that era I'm surprised no one here has squawked about the 190 2.3-16 on the list! Or the SEC!
OK, I'm all "top 100" listed out for awhile.....
Gilly
