300 24 valve/5-speed into W201

Has anyone transplanted a 3-litre 24 valve engine and manual gearbox in a 190E 2.3-16? Where might I find a good engine and gearbox?

I don't know if it was ever done before, however it can be done for a price. Sounds like a fun project either way. I would suggest going with the 3.2 liter LH injection M104 instead of the 3.0 liter M104 due to the fact that more were produced, the injection is EFI Vs. KE-Jetronic and they have a larger displacement. I would suggest also looking on Ebay as a source for your engine/parts car. You should try to purchase a whole car because you will need many of the engine peripherals such as computer, wiring harnesses, engine accessories ect. However, if your going to use an aftermarket injection system you can skip purchasing the peripherals. As for the transmission, I have no idea if there is a bolt up 5-speed manual for the M104 but you may be able to make an adaptor to fit the engine to a 2.6/3.0 liter M103 manual trans.
Good Luck!
Adam

It's been done with both the early CIS-E M104 and a late HFM M104.

Look for some posts from cpiad from about 3 or 4 years ago. He transplanted a C36 AMG engine into his '85 euro-spec 190E 2.3-16. Another guy, I think his name is Mike Skees transplanted the 3.0 liter M104 into a '91 or '92 190E although I don't believe he ever posted here.

The M102, M103, and M104 share transmission bolt patterns. The Getrag is the strongest so I'd suggest you use a stock 16V tranny. You'll need a 6-cylinder flywheel if you're converting from a 4 banger.

Glen and Adam,

Thank you for the posts. If Glen is correct, my getrag in the 16V makes the project much easier. I will just have to think about the rear/diff ratio. I also wonder how well matched the getrag gears are for the performance curve in an M104.....

There is a guy on 190Rev that has done it. I believe from an E320. His name is RolexBenz something or other on the Rev.

That's me... Glen is right, I did swap a 1995 E320 motor into my 190E. No joke! Sportline 3.2 from 190revolution.net swapped a 1994 M104 into his 190E and put in a 5spd from a standard 2.6.

I transplated one into my 300E. then I'm installing the 190E 2.3-16 5-speed manual.

Look for the 90-92 versions as they can use your current electronics without having to do stand-alone. with those savings, you can boost laster

M104 24V into 190E 16V

Thank you for that tip. That is a great suggestion.

Rolexbenz, you still out there?

There was a 201 on UK EBay with a W140 engine and autobox recently, The engine was a 320 fitted with all the S class management ECUs etc originaly with a 300 24V manual which is almost identical to the 16v gearbox, then later to improve driveability the 140s autobox. The owner said it was quite a straightforward swop with even the 2.6 exhaust hooking up with little modification! obviously access to a complete unrobbed donor car is the secret to any major conversion. The work would be much easier on a 2.6 because of the different front 6cyl clip with recessed radiator location, amazingly the guy had run the convereted car for five years with standard 2.6 brakes!

are you sure? if this was true I would have installed the 3.2 L inline six from the 93+ S320 and I could have saved lots of time as there is a twin turbocharger kit readily available.
