Hi,
I'm currently in the market for a 16v. I'm trying to decide if the mechanical lifters of the '87 offer any advantages over the '86 hydraulics. Do they have a higher redline or more top end power? And if so, can the '86 be converted for a reasonable price? Thanks Darryl |

Darryl:
BOTH 1986 and 1987 190E 2.3-16V cars have the exact same engine. I believe the only difference between the two years are Air Conditioning upgrades (for the '87), and the '87 has headlight wipers. If you're comparing an '86 190E 2.3-8V (hydraulic) vs. an '87 190E 2.3-16V (mechanical + dual overhead cams), there's LOADS of difference. Just in power, an 8V puts out around 120 HP whereas the 16V puts out 167 HP. You're better off purchasing the 16V -- it's a far superior car to the 8V. Check the classifieds, I think Benzmac is still offering his 1987 2.3-16V for sale at around $11,000 (there's pics in that forum also). Good Luck! brian |
