Does anyone out there have any ideas or examples for modifying a 300D both in the engine and primarily in the suspension areas? I recently purchase an '85 300D w/ 153K miles and absolutely love it, except for the wallowing ride and handling. Coming from a BMW 3 series is a bit tough to get used to. I would like to firm up the springs a little and put on Bilsteins along with 205/55/R16 wheels and rims. Who has experience with this? Thanks for your help.

The car should respond to handling tweaks just as any other sedan would. Probably not much you are going to do with the engine to get realistic power gains. (without compromising the diesel's nature/qualities)
Since handling is probably where you want to focus your upgrade budget I would recommend starting with a set of sharper handling wheels and tires. You may also want to consider going to suspension upgrades but give the wheels and tires a shot first. On that note, I'd advise you to post something in the Wheels and Tires forum for Luke and the rest of the gang from Tirerack to read. They should be able to recommend some good options for you. If you have any other specific questions I'll be more than happy to try to point you in the right direction. Hope this helps...Lee |
