5-speed manual/stick for C36 & other M104's

Taken from Ezeneli member of mbworld.org:

=======
Solution For The Transmission Problem! I Sloved It!!!

You heard right I have ordered the 5spd tranny from a 1996 C280 with all parts needed for conversion. All parts from europe. Parts are as follows

1. 5spd non-auto tranny rated for 320HP
2. Pedals (clutch and brake)
3. Propeller shafts (drive shafts)
4. All fluid lines
5. Flywheel
6. New Clutch
7. All nuts and bolts.

No more tranny problems for me. I paid $1150 for the tranny and all parts. Shipping was another $600 arm and a leg for shipping. And $240 for new clutch w/ shipping. It will take 3 weeks to arrive. The labor is goning to be $600 for all. This is going to be an easy conversion.
If any of you are intrested let me know. I can get all parts needed for you. This is the answer to all of your tranny problems. This conversion works for all C280 and C36 cars that I know of. In europe most C280s are 5spd and some C36s all share the same tranny.
If you look at your brake resivior you can see a spout on the side of it that is closed off that is for the slave cylinder in the clutch pedal assy. And look behind the brake booster you can see black plugs were the lines go you car is all ready for the conversion, so dont let a mechanic tell you its a hard job to do its not about 10 hours of labor its in there service books. The labor for the tranny, clutch and shafts is 6 hours remove and install and the pedal assy. is 4 hours.

Hey Neil,
That's great news! Something doesn't make sense though. Why would MB spec a transmission rated at 320 HP for a car that only makes ~200 HP? More importantly, what's the torque rating? In a regular M104 3.2 it would probably hold up fairly well but I'd be gentle with it in your 3700 lb. wagon and the C36's torque.

Would love to see you go through with it!

If "Ezeneli" knowledge is correct, and the Euro C280 and C36 shared the same tranny, then it would make sense it is spec'd for 320HP, since the C36 made 280HP and MB usually has a safety margin in the drivelines.

The M103 and M104 share the same tranny bolt-pattern so it should work for a M103-powered vehicle, however, it might be cheaper to find a 300E manual donor car.

I maybe wrong but I always thought the 201 16V 5speed gearbox bolted right up to the M104 engines this would surely be easier to obtain and with closer ratios then the C280 202 unit. The auto option is certainly much more popular in Europe then the manual gearbox. I have naver seen a manual C36 and doubt that a standard production version ever existed!,Are you really sure that you want to go to a manual transmission the clutch action and gearchange on the older generation Benzs leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. The gear change when driven hard tends to be clunky and unrefined taking a lot of the pleasure from fast driving. This is an area which contemporary BMWs are far superior in which pains me to admit!

How much is the 16V trans rated for? BTW, i thought transmissions were usually rated in torque? Do you have the torque numbers on it?

That sounds interesting though, but i plan on making more than 320HP and dont want to have to buy 2 manual transmissions..

KE, Just in case, check if you need the trans crossmember and the shifter surround. These are different on an older W124 chassis. Also the exhaust pipe bracket that attaches to the trans.

Very cool!

There was a reference in the post about the M111 having the same tranny bell housing bolt pattern as the M102/103/104...can anyone confirm???

The converted C36 got into a head-on accident, but the driver is OK, and it wasn't his fault (drunk driver hit him).

Check it out at the link posted previously by me.

Hello all I was the one that did the conversion. Worked great. But I was in an accident. I have sold the conversion package to a forum member in club202.
BTY my C36 made about 280HP. Also dont not covert your w202 car with a manual from a 190E or any older mercedes you will have lots of trouble, with shift linkage and other misc. parts. Just get one from a C280.

why 5 speed and not 6 speed? this is a bit O.T. but I hated diablos for being 5 speed. When the Murcie came out in 6 speed I was overjoyed!
