Boring out my E320
Here's the deal. Have been thinking of mods to the TE for a modest performance increase and came across a 97K engine for around $800. Am thinking of buying the engine and boring it out to a 3.6. Question is,,, do I just use the AMG 36 pistons ? Are the rods the same, as is the crank ? Will the injection need remapped ? What major problems might I encounter ? I'm hoping that just a bore increase and maybe a compression increase might not be a real big deal and really won't cost that much compared to the alternatives. Any thoughts ?

try to fins a C36 engine.... that way you dont have to do much and you already have a 95 car, so the swap shouldn;t be too hard.

Have considered that Ash, but from what I am hearing the complete computer and wiring setup needs to be changed, and that is one hassle I was hoping to avoid. As usual we all look for an easier/cheaper way, but it's not always possible.

I'm not sure if that is right... Your car is already HFM I believe and so is the C36, so swap should be much easier.
Talk to neil, Ke6djc (or Ke6DCJ forget which spelling it is.) He has the w124 wagon he did a c36 transplant and he definately would know what the best approach for this would be. The beauty of the C36 swap would be that it can be serviced easily by any good MB tech or dealer. And it is already done up quite nicely. Alon

The C36 engine sucks. do the custom deal, it would be better and dont stop at 3.6 liters. Is it a guy on here has a 4.0 twin turbo? anyways, hes out there someplace. If youre gonna do it, do it right.

A 4.0 ? You have my attention. Hope someone chimes in with the details.

Have low compression custom pistons made; add custom forge rods, bore the block. Port and polish the head and run a super charger or turbo, then turn up the boost.

there's no replacement for cubic inch displacement
This is a lie. It should be:
There's no replacement for cubic BUCKS displacement. I could build an engine that would make 200 hp/liter. It would last about 10 passes, and cost around 10 grand, even if I started with a mercedes engine. If you are looking for power, try to find an AMG head/FI/Intake/ECU with the cams. The top end is where the magic is done. The bottom end only has to live through it. Mercedes bottom ends are, out of the box, about as good as it gets. Once you have the power, then the REAL fun begins: Transmission, rear end, not to mention the stuff that you never imagined could break.

Ok,,, I don't want to get real carried away here. Around 300 HP would be nice, and keeping it reasonable I would hope to keep things from breaking.

The E36 engine uses a longer stroke crank to gain the increased displacement, it does use different pistons but I think this was to gain a higher compression ratio. To be honest the first E36 I drove I found a little disappointing below 3000RPM it didnt feel as eager as a standard 104, the problem with these units is everyone thinks there worth a million dollars irespective of what mileage or thrashing theyve had. If you can afford the down time then some good qaulity parts in a normal 104 could be cheaper and more reliable, at least you will know that you can get replacement parts the E36 ECU takes a couple of months to come from AMG!
