I've been reading some of your posts on 190E 16V related threads ... great stuff. On a different note though, can you please, pretty please , send me (or post) the name of the manufacturer who makes the custom bellhousing for you all the same?

sorry all,,,,been busy-busy-busy, so the manual conversion has been moved to "back burner" project status for the moment. It's going to be at leeast next spring before I can get back to this one. I WILL get to it eventually though.

I would love to have it for my 95 E300D. I would be interested in seeing how it works first though. But you would have to install it for me and do all the modifications. I don't know anyone and my mechanical knowledge is probably equivalent to your knowledge of how to perform heart surgery

I'm not worried about that, I'm worried about where to mount a clutch hydraulic master (we are not talking about a cable are we?!??!) in the area under the 500E's hood? It does not seem as spacious as my 300E.

I'd love to have a manual trans in mine, the auto is the only part of any MBZ that I've owned that scares me (I've had to rebuild one of them already.. $$$$$$ ).

How about some 107 V8 guys

I mean if any of the mb's should be standard (hell ill take a 5sped) the sl series should be. Anyone have any ideas? Are there are any 6 cylinder sl's which came with a standard transmission? And if so will they mate with the sl engine?? What we would need to install a clutch - one pedal installation. The drive train I hope would link up. I wouldnt know tho but If someone does I may be right behind. I have the 622.5 (722?) six speed auto transmission and from what ive read its problematic. I think it was the mb answer to the porsche tiptronic. I have some moron rebuilding it now. So I may need a new tranny, again, in like five months So maybe a conversion to a simple and light six speed is just the answer!!

It seems like you could find room to mount it anywhere being hydraulic you could run those lines about anywhere. Those masters arent very big either. What troubles me (besides the engine/gearbox coupling) is the linkage. Maybe b/c Im ignorant as hell in this area. I mean are transmissions and gearbox'es gonna be the same length?

Somebody do it already. Unfortunately an e class conversion wont likely help the sl class etc given the different engines etc. Its probably even problematic between the 320 and 500.

From about 1990-1992 the 300SL/SL320's were available with a 5-speed.

Unfortunately, it's only for the M104 6-cylinder, so it won't mate-up the the M119 V8.

It's been done

I have a friend who had such a car "engineered" by RennTech. 1992 500E that is now a 6 liter with the six-speed sourced from a BMW 850Ci. I believe that is a Getrag unit.

Charles,

you NEED to get pictures of your friend's car, including from the bottom with the tranny.

I'd be interested when or IF one is made. I would have to see the first one and how it performed first.

Gerry, is Franzs Tremec the same one they are discussing here? I thought his was a 5 speed manual. Have you seen or driven one of the converted 6.3's? I know Franz claims to have a kit for both the 6.3 and 6.9, I would like to hear some first hand experience. In particular, installing the pedal and clutch assembly and making console changes (especially in the 6.9).

Who was the other M100 guy here in the US that was making an adapter for a Chevy tranny?

Fred
