Hello guys,
Check this out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=513085982 It is a 500E with a RennTech carbon fiber air cleaner. I've never actually seen it before, and it looks pretty nice. What do you guys think? Another thing I was wondering about is what are the two little red lights below the turn signals? Have a look at the picture; I can't figure out what those are for. If anybody can tell me, it would be appreciated. Thanx a lot!

The carbon air filter housing is killer. It is also killer on the wallet. I think the price is like $3,000 or so.
The red lights are for the radar. I have seen this as an aftermarket install.

What do you gain from a carbon fiber air filter housing. How much more hp can one hope to gain?

I just checked out http://www.renntechmercedes.com and looked up the specs for the carbon fiber air cleaner. It is actually only $950US, and you can expect a gain of 10bhp and 8 lbs.-ft of torque if you equip your 400E/E420 or 500E/E500 with one. So that would translated to $95US/bhp and $118.75US/lb.-ft of torque. CaptAlex300E, I don't think they offer the carbon fiber air cleaner for the 300E. The RennTech Camshaft Kit for the 300E seems to produce around the same hp/torque results. I must say again, it sure LOOKS GOOD!!!

I have one of the carbon fiber air cleaner boxes on my car. I am not too thrilled with it as it has developed a crack in the clear plastic over the RennTech logo and was apparently installed poorly. The box was installed by cutting up the original box, removing some baffles and gluing the carbon fiber box onto the original box. Whoever installed mine did a poor job of gluing (silicone caulk) and left some holes in the underside of the original box (small screw holes from removing the baffles??)that let in unfiltered air.
It does look OK (except for the crack) but seems like a lot of $$$$ for what you get. I can't comment on performance gains as I don't have an original to compare it to.... |

Depends on whether 10 HP is worth $1,000 to you.
For $2,000, you can purchase the BergWerks nitrous-oxide kit, engineered specifically for the 500E, which will give you 100 HP. You are not effectively able to tell the difference of 10 HP (though many claim a huge difference via their "butt dynos" whatever that means). 100HP, you can tell immediately. The carbon fiber airboxes eventually cloud over and yellows as the CF gets "baked" with the large degree of underhood heat generated by the M119 engine. Cheers, Gerry |

BergWerks went out of business. I guess you didn't know. Sorry to break the news to you.
