Does anyone know the actual (real life) performance difference between these two models (lets say a 92 300E and a 93 E320) (I know the E320 came out in 94 however there were some 300Es with the 104 engine in 93)? Is the 320 faster and if yes by how much? I know about the horsepower difference (177 vs 217) however the differencial gearing may be different.
Thanks.

Alex

Yes, I think all 93 model 300E are equip with
3.2L M104 engines. The 94-95 model E320 weight lighter then the pervois models, therefore they should be faster.
The M104 engines has two features that helps in the performance sector. The DOHC engine with valuable cam timing (intake)and valuable intake runner length.( Someone please correct me if I am wrong on this)
The later model also starts at 1 gear.
You can also compare the two model by caculating the weight and HP torque ratio.
Hope this help
Pete regards

Alex,
The two motors will perform similarly but the 3.2 motors (from MY 93-95) will have more low-end grunt in daily driving. Though the new engine produces more power/torque over a wider range and does better on gas the early cars are almost if not just as fast due to the gearing changes. The M103 cars had a 3.07 diff and the M104's had a 2.65. I'm pretty sure the M104's were slightly heavier as well. (M104=3.2 DOHC, M103=3.0 SOHC) They perform similarly, perhaps a slight edge to the newer cars. However....the earlier cars have a MUCH better handling feel in my opinion. Most importantly though, is that you go someplace that has both cars in stock and test drive both of them. That will tell you more than any spec sheet. Let me know how the test driving goes.

Hope this helps....Lee
