I was wondering, if I were to remove the limiter from a 1995 M-B E420 and put on a set of decent wheels/rubbers (17"), and I basically kept my foot on the gas, and I am not afraid of dying or my engine blowing up, what is the theoretical top speed I can hit with a stock engine? Is there some fancy arithmetic you can do by taking into power, weight, drag coefficient, etc. etc.?

Well I guess I'll "Wave and Dance the Disco Duck" as he passes me at 150 mph.

Hey Duck:

Forget theoretical, drop on by Ely, Nevada, in May or September and you'll have 90 miles to find out the real top speed. Don't forget, fat tires add wind resistance. It wouldn't hurt to shave your head bald either.

With a 2.24 in back, the E420 will easily hit 155.

WOWsers...I'm disappointed

On the 1995 model brochure with the description of the E420, it says my car is electronically limited to 155mph. I was hoping it might be able to pull to something higher without the limiter in place, but from what you guys said, I guess it is not possible. I must say, I'm disappointed...I was hoping somebody would pop up and say 180mph...oh well, that's life!

Hey 160 mph is fast enough. You blow away 98 percent of cars with such a high speed. Put in a better intake, new air filters, use high test fuel, and make sure your car is in top mechanical condition and I would not be suprised if you hit 170 mph.

155 would be damn scary...

155 maybe in a porsche or ferrari - but in an E class?! I'm sure it's capable but would it just float all over the place? They don't even have wings...

Tires start acting pretty funny at 150. Don't be silly, you should run your car at Wendover, Utah (Bonneville). When the SCTA is there. It only cost $75 per run, you get a time sheet, a hat, and a shirt. You have 5 miles basically, that ought to do it.

Tell me if I am silly here...

Take your tach reading in highest gear at say 60mph and 90mph. Subtract the 60mph tach reading from the 90mph one. Now, that should give you a 30mph for every X of engine RPM. Divide the difference between redline and the 90mph tach reading by that X value and multiply by 30mph.

Example:
2000RPM at 60MPH
4000RPM at 90MPH
1000RPM for every 30MPH
redline is 5500RPM
1500RPM between 5500RPMand 90MPH
1.5 increments of 1000RPM between 4000RPM and 5500RPM
1.5 * 30 + 90 = 135MPH

That works only if your car has enough power to overcome the frictional forces and actually make it to redline.

I'm sure that the car can hit 150-155 mph, and more. Just read the featured cars section about the 400E. Lee, states that "the 400E easily cruises at 150 mph all day"
