filming my driving

anyone know a method of shooting video through the windshield right onto a computer hardrive?

using the least amount of equipment, I have an Apple G4 400 Powerbook, how should I set it up? can I use an iSight? and what kind of hard drive space to shoot just a few minutes at a time?

any advice or tips appreciated.

Scott

It would be nice if you gave some specifics. Make/model/format of camera, etc etc etc.

I wanted to know if there is any way to record through an Apple iSight onto a hard drive. I found some positive info on this at the Apple site.

Also reviewed some David Poque articles at the New York Times on recorders.

I wanted to just capture some moments from my road car.

Most digital hard drive recorders are set to record DV video. I doubt the iSight transmits in DV. Your best bet is to find a cheap miniDV camcorder to mount on the car and just record to tape. The Canon ZR series is a good bet.

Also, just think "suction cups".

Don't want to rain on your parade, however unless your into serious drifting, it's not worth the effort. Video footage whether digital or tape looks pretty ordinary unless your travelling double the posted limit, past othermoving traffic and driving like your being chased by the coppers. Also bear it in mind, if you are into moments of lunacy and you get sprung by the wollopers, they will be very interested in your time/date video footage, seize same and present it in Court at your trial! Just look at any car chase footage, even Police pursuits, unless there is ballistic driving and major carnage, it looks pretty ordinary. You may have innocent intentions and just want footage of what actually happened split seconds before you crashed and are just being considerate to the Coroner. Back to you!

Unless you have the balls to mount the camera on a body panel. Now that would be sweet.

If I knew how I'd open the sunroof and clamp a camera up there or clamp a camera on the B-pillar.

I want to do this on the cheap, but give me five thousand to play with and I'd probably be able to film some nice footage.

They make suction cup mounting kits. They hold very well.

ethan,

I saw a webpage about a jaguar xe that a guy from seattle took on a road trip with his young son, but have no idea where I came across it. He used an iSight and a powerbook very successfully.

cheers,
dan

very interesting film of his road trip, he has an iSight and a valentine 1 radar detector - so very cool.

A little tid-bit from me. Someone I know had a 1967 Ferrari 275-GTB in a blue color not much different from this Jag's. The Ferrari was newly painted and it created the most spectacular reflections from a blue sky with cumulus clouds. A lot of the effect was created by the wonderful broadly curved body panels the XJ and the 275 shared.

Thanks for finding the web page.
What a great way to record a road trip.

I have a cam that incorporates speed radar with streaming video - I can tie it into my laptop but it's much easier to film on tape then edit out the unwanted footage and dowload the "good stuff". If you are looking for camera mounts and very cool stuff - find them at stalkerradar.com
