Uhhh.. you've GOT to be kidding me right? The aftermarket muflers we're talking about in this thread is a 2.5" inlet straight thru design split into 2x2" tips. What back pressure? We're not takling about a 4-cyl motor running 2 bars of boost off a T66 turbo here, don't think a 3" straight thru exhaust is necessary. Have you actually gotten under a 300CE and LOOKED at the BIG ASS muffler used to keep the cars "Mercedes quite"?
I've checked my old man's CLK430. Still quiet a lot of muffler action going on. In reality, replacing the stock muffler w/ no removal of resonator and/or hi-flow cat will probably produce no noticeable HP gains as the current V8 motors are well tuned... Personally, I'm not willing to drop $75 to run a dyno to see maybe a 2hp gain & I believe Alon has already stated he's not doing the muffler mod for the hp gains either. PS - going with a 3" Apex'i N1 muffler can for my Saab 9-3 as soon as I get back into the States...

>>my point exactly, i read an article in European car recently about reducing too much back pressure. in many cases without doing intake work, it could actually hinder performance slightly. i was never addressing the fact that these aftermarket mufflers are restrictive in anyway. right now the stock MB mufflers have some level of back pressure.<< We're not takling about a 4-cyl motor running 2 bars of boost off a T66 turbo here, don't think a 3" straight thru exhaust is necessary. Backpressure reduction
Walden,
The effect that you described ( too much reduction of back pressure) is a phenomenon that occurs primarily in racing and with engines in a much higher state of tune with a non-catalytic, strictly race muffler application. Puting a Cat Back system on your CLK430 and an H-pipe ( if there isnt already one) for equilization of exhaust pressure would be a good upgrade and should not pose that type of problem. Jason M. Hi jason...
I have thought all along that reducing some back pressure by getting some of these manufacturers replacement silencer/mufflers or a cat back system starting from the resonator. But i read a recent article in MAX magazine. where they did stage by stage bolt on improvements on a VW normally aspired A4. The intake which was a cold air system from K&N and the Chip added a little bit of HP and Torque. About 3-4 HP/Torque. But once they added the cat back system, the reduced back pressure gave them negative return on their acceleration but helped in the higher RPM range. So they lost about 1-1.5 HP/torque but they gained more aggressive sound and looks. so, when looking for a system for my car, CLK430, i want to be very careful. From my research, i think its either i go with the entire exhaust system from an expensive tuner like Carlsson, or do nothing at all. The price for performance gain wouldn't be worth it if i just the cat back or muffler alone. then comes the next reality, if i want the maximum performance out of my CLK, i should just trade it in and get the CLK55!! (too expensive for me!! ) take care and thanks for the reply... |
