Has anyone had problems with the steering rack leaking? My car has suffered fairly severe failure of rack seals and a couple of hoses....I am going to the dealers to review my options for repairing / replacing the rack and various parts.

Thanks,

Not a drop I'm happy to report. What were the symptoms (beyond some degree of leaking)? Did everything sorta let go at once?

Sorry to hear the car's down...I hope it's something cheap! Please keep us posted, and best of luck at the dealer.

It's going to hurt....

Micheal,

Just returned from the dealer, the pump and gear need to be rebuilt or replaced....Close to $3000 to do both. Lots of labor involved.
I am going to get the parts list together and see about doing some of the repairs myself...

It went all at once, the car was just in for the 90K not long ago and I had been complaining of leaks. They found a few but at the time did not see a problem with the steering system.

I'll let you know how it goes.

BIG bummer! I've never heard of such a problem. Has anyone? If indeed this is so rare, perhaps there's a used one you can pop in? If that were an option, I'd consider it myself since I really don't think this is something that is a weak spot.

Sorry for your troubles, man. Best of luck

Bummmer Man

Sorry to hear about your car. Hope it turns out to be less expensive than that to fix.

I'll be out there tomorrow looking at my 500 to see if there are any clues. I just was playing with my steering the other weekend wondering if it had gotten a little loose.

Can you tell the rest of us 500E owners if there were any symptoms of this prior to failure besides leaks?

Thanks,
Eric

Sympathizers....

Thanks for all the empathy guys!
I found one friend (haven't actually met him face 2 face)
here in Austin that has had his steering pump redone.

I took a look at things, there is juice everywhere! (fan shroud, bottom pan...) I also understand why they have so much labor in the job, it is really tight in there! The fluid reservior was way down!

I am going to a well respected independent and get another opinion today.

The only symptoms where some noise and lots of fluid, I had been chasing a leak (but it was a combination, oil - steering and trans fluids) all mixing on the lower cover pan and dripping off in various spots. Also found the oil pressure sending unit is leaking at the block. That should be easy to fix...

Ouch, Bryan! I hate that for you! Benzmac just did the 75k on mine the week after Christmas. When I changed oil prior to taking it to him, I noticed my PS pump leaking. He and I discussed it and felt we could wait a little while before tackling the seals, which I know is a problem with 500E pumps.

Now that I hear what you are going through, I am going to keep a MUCH closer eye on the situation.

I hope you get better news from the independent.

Good luck!
