Advise on 1993 500E

I have heard of a 1993 500E with 217,000kms (136,000 miles) for sale. Guy says it's in mint condition and MB serviced since new. I haven't been able to see it or the work orders yet but wondered if it's worth the $19,500 Canadian (approx. $15,600 US) that he's asking.

Thanks,
Geno.

It really depends upon the condition of the car and what it needs restoration wise. I would suggest you have it inspected by a local MB dealer and have them go over everything on the car and comprise a list of items needing attention. Service history would also be something to look at, the last thing you want to do is drop 15 grand on a car and then drop another 5-7 grand on major service items.

Hey there! It will be due for new timing chains at 144k kms = major dollars! Get an estimate from a dealer.

Those cars are very rare in Canada and its worth the money if its in good shape and you can afford the regular maintenance to keep it that way. Even if another $5k is required, its still a good deal IMHO

BTW, where/what is POCO?

I go there a lot on business. I believe POCO is what the locals call Port Coquitlam in B.C.

I know the car you are talking about

Is it the Spruce green one in the Buy/Sell? It is not in PoCO (Port Coquitlam) but in a lot in Surrey on King George Hwy. The car doesn't look that bad and I would say go look at it. 217,000 km's is not that bad IF the car is looked after. That is what you need to find out....

Absolutely correct!

That's the one, went to see it this afternoon.

It's a FIVE, maybe.... Dents and chips, interior's smelly and scruffy, trunk carpet isn't from this car. Can't lock the doors from the driver's side. Boat style cup-holders screwed to the doors. Looks like a leak somewhere near the tranny cooler. $8500 Declaration. Serviced by MB until about 5 years ago when the owner of the lot bought the car and started having his own mechanics work on it. I'm waiting to see the MB service records.

I'm thinking Port Renfrew but that isn't the West Coast Trail you're referring to. You must have learned that language from the native culture on the island or picked it up in Malliardville....

It is Port Renfrew.....

......and he is reffering to the Juan De Fuca Trail. This trail goes south to Sooke and does not cost anything to hike. The West Coast Trail has the fee and is limited to a certain amount of users. Both are good hikes. Hey Dean, when you were in Port Renfrew, diid you go see the Red Crek FIr? This is currently the largest Douglas Fir on record (49'around and broken at 242'!!)....sorry, don't want to hyjack the thread!

Back to the 500E. Is it that bad? I was asking $27,900 for mine but it is near mint (or at least excellent shape) and I have all service records. I thought this car was a good buy if it was in good shape. It would be nice to have a 500E so low ball them. There are a number of flags on that car that can give you leverage. Cheers!

I prefer to sail the strait rather than hike it.

Well, maybe I'm being a little harsh but I can tell you the kid's '86 420 is in way better shape. As for lowballing it, I'm not sure if I'll move at all. Trev's finding the 420 is hard on gas (for an 18 year old working 6 hours a week at McD's) so I may end up taking it over once the lease on the Jetta's up - or maybe even before.

Thing is, I'm really finding every Benz I see I like. Always wanted an SL, now the E500, E55, S500 and the list continues to grow. I missed on the 6/49 and the Super 7 so eventually I'll have to narrow it down somehow. Adding to the problem is this boating thing I do, every so often I need to pack a pile of stuff somewhere or drop the little sailboat onto the roof to go and get wet.

Well......

Good luck Geno and too bad the car wasn't better. I still think the price is not too bad if you get MB to look at it. On 500ecstacy, someone is selling a tan interior which is what I think that car has. Anyway, have a good one neighbour.
Cheers!

i may be mistaken, but I think that car used to belong to one of the Griffiths. As in the "used to own the Canucks, Griffiths"

Green with Parchment interior & cupholders is a pretty vague descriotion, but it matches the car that was a Griffiths car. Saw it at a lot around 4th Ave. years and years ago. Can't remember if it had a dec on it at the time or not.

Gee no! Thought I saw a sign while on a kayak trip into Windy Bay on the Charlottes last year making the same claim!

Anyhoo...

Some of my comrades were telling me it was a wild ride this year . Unfortunately, it conflicted with Trev's graduation ceremonies so I couldn't enter.

I wasn't able to find the interior. Any idea how much he wanted and how complete it is?
