ECU chip, good buy?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1992...sspagenameZWDVW

Thats the link to a chip on e-bay, buy it now is 89.00. I've heard there is a chip that is beneficial, but I wasn't sure if this one specifically was good. Has anyone heard of this chip or know anything about it? I have a 1993 400e, but I'm sure this brand makes chips for all models.

Has anyone heard of or used this one specifically?

yeah, it was me. I posted it under technical and didn't get much feedback. I appreciate your comments, I just thought I might get more diversity here, and I was trying to see if anyone had used this chip specifically. Thanks again though.

Well, its on ebay, could be a kid in his basement...if it fried your ECU who do you complain to and what do you do? And you can code things into the ECU that will fry it or your motor...

Ebay has its good and bad points...but these "Tuner" chips on ebay are scarey...beyond that its up to you....I would stick with a known business with a track record..and physical location, yeah it will cost more but this is one of those cases where you get what you pay for....

Hopefully a fellow member can direct you to a benz tuner with a good reputation. Best of luck.

If you are looking for cheap power you bought the wrong type of car.

Some guys swap in the 2.88 rear diff for quicker acceleration.

A stock 400E already has way too much motor for the stock tires, especially with no limited slip rear. I would address those problems before making the car go any faster.

Aren't you the same poster who coulnd't get his 400E to pass emissions testing? Maybe you should see to it that the car runs properly before bolting extra parts on.

The ECM costs $1100- $1500 plus labor. The cheap chip might become a most expensive purchace.

for me this site is a lot of talk, I don't plan on doing these modifications for some time. I am just looking into stuff. And yes, that is me, with the car that won't pass emissions. I brought it to a local shop that came recommended from this board, so hopefully it gets fixed properly. The mechanic seemed to think it could be a computer adjustment, maybe the lambda control, as it seems to be running to rich. Everything else about the car looks solid and there is documentation of work and service since the first owner had it. The guy who sold it to me recently had the throttle replaced because the engine was idling high, and I am hoping that it just needs to be adjusted to pass emissions.

As far as the tires goes, I've heard various reports, some saying 215 and others saying 225, for the width. What would be the ideal recomendation for tire size and should I get new wheels, possibly bigger?

The car is plenty fast but I was just looking for the quick, cheap power, which as I gather, does not exist for this car, or many mercedes in general. I didn't realize a faulty or immitation product could cause serious damage.

I purchased that chip on ebay about a year ago for my 500E. I did notice a little extra power with my seat-o-pants meter and it didn't seem to blow anything up. I do plan on eventually comparing both chips with my accelerometer when I get my "Check Engine" light debugged. Comparing the bin files of the stock and performance chip shows that there were a lot of changes made to the data. I believe the chip on ebay is actually Renntech's program. I would trust thier stuff hands down. How much power does it add and is it worth it? My answer is unconclusive. BTW, The speed limiter is also removed by the perf chip if you think you'll ever need/want to go that fast.
Good Luck!
Adam

first off, I really like your car. Secondly, what speed does the limiter usually kick in? Third, can you send me a message when you find out more?

Thanks! The speed limiter on the 500E is set to 155MPH I imagine it would be the same on the 400E. I'll email you when I post my results on the site.

The link doesn't work but the chip that I got off ebay which I imagine was the same one knocked my 0-60 from 5.4-5.8 to around 5.7-6.2. Also I could no longer spin the rear tires.

225/18/35 are the best tire size. You will have to get the offset right but they fit with no rubbing. I drove mine with that combo for a while. I could still spin the tires in cold weather though.

Forget chips unless you get a good one and unplug the O2 sensor so the engine will run in open loop.

The best and cheapest performance mod for the 400E is to get a 2.82 diff. I think that possibly with a custom chip, increased timing, ram air system e.g. through the front grill and disconnected O2 sensor you could see a real 30-50 horsepower increase but that will take a lot of time and education and/or money. About the difference between a warm and really cold day with this car.
