My AMG exhaust has developed a metallic pinging sound coming from the tailpipe after shut-down even after short 20 minute drive. Any guesses?

You've got to LOVE the pinging and popping. In 1990 my father got a Porsche C4 - and man did that think ping and pop like crazy after a drive. I used to sit in the garage and listen to it for a while.

In 1992 i got a 325is and it popped.
1998 528i popped like crazy. My girlfriend thought something was wrong with the car.

It took several thousand miles for my C43AMG to start popping and pinging but it does now - and i consider it healthy.

My best guess it that we are hearing the effects of dimensional change as the exhaust system cools down.

Your exhaust heats up while driving, then afterwards, it cools down and it makes that noise. It is normal. The sound of metal expanding after contracting.
