Question 400e organ donor for 300TE?

I've got a line on a '92 400e as a potential engine swap donor for an '89 300te... The 400e won't cost much (a total) and has around 85k. I know it doesn't have to panache of of the 500e but should motivate the wagon with a bit more verve than it has now...

Any thoughts? Any major changes to w124s from '89 to '92? Any pitfalls to avoid?

if you have the whole donor car, then the swap should not be too bad.

Things I can think of would be some ecu's, Various other electronic tid bits, possibly modifying the firewall, trans tunnel etc to fit the bigger engine and trans, and maybe you will need to do a custom driveshaft as the one from the TE may be too long depending ont he length of the 400e tranny.

Not sure what else, maybe the front cross member may be different, but who knows. with a full donor car, you would be assured to have all the necessary parts.

Differential in the wagon is probably a 3.27 so if you left it, it would be quick off the line. the 400e should have a 2.28 I believe.

Others will definately chime in with more info for you.

I'd do significant research on the structural changes made to fit the V8 engine in 124 chassis before proceeding too far down this road. Suggest you read up on the 500E, and what was required to fit the V8 in that car. The 4.2 liter M119 is exactly the same size, so the same modifications will be required of your wagon. I think you're looking at a lot of body and chassis modifications to make it fit.

The tranny tunnel on the firewall will be a problem. When they said they shoehorned the V8, they really meant it

Have been looking at the engine compartments of our two E's,,,, wouldn't really want to try to stuff the engine from the 400 into the TE.

It would be easier and cheaper to graft the wagon's "top" starting at the roof line and working you way back and down the rear hatch.

Someone is actually doing this.
