Considering Turboing an SL600
I am currently interested in purchasing a late 90's SL 600, but I am depresed with the relatively low power output (389 HP) for a late 90's 6.0L V12. I know there was a twin turbo AMG version. How hard would it be to convert a standard SL600 to a twin turbo SL600. Any idea of cost etc. Is this a bolt on? Also I cant find any good tunning kits for these, in that sense the SL500 is a better choice. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

There is plenty of power just being stock. I do know someone on this board has a supercharged SL600. But just stock, you won't notice that there is only 390 horseys. It will get up and go, and it isnt afraid to leave rubber from a stop.

AMG did not turbocharge this motor (so far as I am aware). Rather they bored it out to 7.3 litres giving 535bhp. I understand Brabus took it to 7.3 lites as well, but they were able to obtain 582bhp. Brabus also offers tuning kit B12 which provides an extra 45bhp out of the box (I assume this is a chip).

The R129 SL 600 is not the best car to modify due to expense. You are better off finding a later model R230 SL 600 with the twin-turbo system already installed or get an R230 SL55 with a kompressor. You would even be better off with a R129 SL 500 and a supercharger kit.

As someone pointed out previously leaving it stock is probably not bad. The SL500 with a Keeman Supercharger kit looks like the best bang for the buck. But it's still short 4 cylinders. I may endup doing what I am thinking of doing with my 88 560SL. A home brew NOX kit. John Roncallo |
