'86 420SEL EZL in '86 500SEL euro

i went to the wrecking yards yesterday, i came across a fairly nice 420SEL. i pulled many parts. the two things that caught my eye were the EZL and the fuel pump relay, the two best things i thought would be good to have in the car as a spare. well i wanted to test the EZL just to make sure it worked and was ok. i installed it and right off the car had more power and ran smoother. so much for a spare, i wanted to keep this one in, this car has the R16 and i have it set for optimum fuel since all i use is chevron 92. i havent yet had a chance to compare the part numbers, but the one from the 420 looked newer and was made by Bosch, whereas the other was seimens. has any one ever seen this before? or have any comments they would like to share?

500 sel euro suspension

Hey Carson356, I just bought a 500 sel euro (it's my first mercedes) and it needs shock pretty badly, as it has a kind of bouncy ride. I have no idea what the original engineered ride is supposed to be like, but I generally prefer a stiff sports car like feel. I'm wondering if the stock shocks will fill the bill or if I should go for something else? Any advice?

Indeed, the HD's are the way to go. They don't make sports for the 126 chassis unfortunetly.. I'd also Strongly recomend you install a set of H&R's..best bang for the buck as far as 126 mods go. The H&R's coupled w/ HD transforms the handling ability of these cars.

As for EZL's, the later ones are made by Siemens, the earlier by Bosch if I'm not mistaken. Funny your car runs stronger w/ the 420 EZL as the argument has been made that the Euro EZL's are more aggressive then their US counterparts. I'd be curious as to your inital advance (0-2500RPM) is..

The only dumb question is one not asked: what is a EZL?

I never figured out what the acronym "EZL" stands for, but they are also called Ignition control module.

Hey Ray,

Do you own your own shop in the San Diego area?

I'd like to pop in one day if I happen to be in the area.

How has this turned out? Did you leave the 420's EZL in? I've been doing a little reading on this and it seems that the 420 EZL has a little more advance than the 560's EZL - although what I read was a static comparison at two rpm/loads. Who knows what goes on in the internal mappings. I've been wondering what a 420 EZL would do in a 560...
