Just curious ...,

... cruising on the highway the other day in the 500E and a GS400 all tricked out happened to come up rather quickly in the fast lane.

So after he passed me and slowed a little I downshifted into 3rd and gave him a glance. He was a younger guy in his late 20's and he wanted to play judging from the smile on his face, so.... I let him have it.

I must admit the 500E really made it seem easy, as if I were toying with this guy. I pulled him by a car length, let off, then pulled a car length on him again before the speed got to high.

At 120 we let off and he wasn't very amused judging by his expression (no smile anymore ) and the way he was checking the car out

Anyway..., anybody have any similar stories they would like to share?

I don't have a story like that, but I enjoyed yours tremendously.

Its always funny to see their face when they get beaten by a car they never thought could beat them.

It makes you wonder if that lexus guy is gonna go out and test drive a 500e to find out why the hell he got beaten by a factory mercedes. ehehehe

HE probably thought you were in a 300e

Hi guys,

U guys are 2 cruel. The Lexus guy probably knew it was the 500E he was up against and didn't put up much a fight J/k. After all, how can any man miss those curves!?

Btw, my friend just leased yet another 540i but this time with the M5 sports package and this new 540 is noticably faster and handles a lot better than the original 540 he used to own. So don't get careless guys!!!

Happy motoring,

ET

I do not have a story like that, but my former 190D has been pushed by an Opel Manta once. I don't know whether anyone knows what a manta () is...but this one had a styling package and all (so the owner was probably very happy with the vehicle he owned).

The car came up from behind on one of our 1,5 car wide farmer roads and started pushing me because he obviously found my speed and acceleration way to (s)low. He kept doing this till the first (nearly) 90 degree corner we drove through. When we entered the curve/corner he was still hanging on my rear bumper. When we came out of the curve I did not only see a gap between me and the manta, but the guy was also having a terrible hard time keeping his car on the road and missing the trees besides both sides of the road. His right rear was out of control what made him wander around from the total right to the total left (besides the road) and back again. I thought he would hit a tree (the stupid idiot), but fortunately it ended up well. After this little demonstration of the Benz's car handling he didn't push at all anymore.

greetingz,

I too have no story, but am pleased to hear the results. I had read some where that the 400GS was 0-60 in 5.4 seconds.
I have also been told that those specs were anomolies and that the typical road going versions were not capable of producing those results. I test drove a new 400GS. It was nice, but it felt small, skinny, and nothing like the performance of my 92 500E. Never having the chance to see door to door results, I enjoyed you sharing yours with me.

Thanks

Crash

I now realize that I was sort of picking on the under-dog, oops.

I just had to see how the 500E stacked up. I don't race the car to often, its just not wise for safety reasons as well as my insurance standing.

I AM looking forward to a track day this summer!

The car never fails to impress me every time I drive Her.

For anyone still considering a 500E purchase, "Just Do It!"

I wish you had the thing on film. The whole nine yards, the guy smiling, and then getting the doors blown off and then all sad. HEHEHEHE Nice Kill Roas.

Got a 1980 vette. She looks basically stock except for the plum paint job. Under the hood I am pushing 400hp in a 383 stroker connected to a worked 700R4 trans(2400stall conv) and 373 rear. Every a** in the world wants to run me because they know stock or even slightly mod she's a 7 second car(plus my plates say BIGSHOT). I ruin them when I feel like beating on it. I was puzzled last week when a guy on an aspencade(full dress honda bike) pulled away from a tollbooth in a wheelie. I always wanted a Miata with a 5.0 ford in it just to mess with people. I love sleepers and both my benz's, well let's say they impress people.

My good friend owns a GS400.. a 99 I think.

When I bought my E430, we did a little street challenge. Based on specs, we both thought he would walk away from me.

No so.. my stock E430 will (slowly) pull away from his GS400 at pretty much any speed we tried, and from rolling start. (Not much room to run that day we stayed under 90ish, and didn't do any hole shot launches).

I'll also note that his GS400 has loosened up quite a bit since new -- net opinion, nice Camry, but not as well made as either a Camry or my E.

Maybe he got a bad example, or I got a good one, but in any case he is now a little less strident about his rice rocket.

Bigshot,

What exactly do you mean by, "she's a 7 second car"?

Aren't you going to need about 1000 hp + to get into the 7's ?

I think he means 7 seconds to 60 (although I think that is optimistic, I recall the 80 Corvette being more in the 9 second range, didn't it have something like 180 hp?? (at least the ones sold here in Calif.). 180 hp, 3 speed auto plus 3400 lbs seems around 9 seconds.

Don't need 1000 hp for 0-60 in 7 seconds. But, I think you'd need MORE than 1000 hp for the 1/4 mile in 7 seconds!

I am not one to talk, though. I have not only NEVER blown away a GS400 in any car I own, but in my MB, I am still working on blowing away Honda Accords!

I'm just give'in Bigshot a hard time.

With 400 hp he should be pulling some respectable times in the 1/4 mile. And Brain you are right, with a car that heavy, more than 1000 hp would be needed.

As far as you blowing away a GS400, who knows? There may be hope, MercedesShop may have a Kleemann kit available for your car soon.

Back to Bigshots' love for the sleeper cars. I recently wedged a european spec 3.8L motor from an old 380SE into a 1988 190E I bought with an overheated 2.3L. With some mods to the camshafts, dual exhaust and nice open muffler, I'm probably getting about 225+bhp. It basically looks like a stock 16-valve since it is smoke silver with a Lorinser kit. Can't tell you how many Civics, Accords, even 325's give it a run since they can hear the exhaust at idle waiting at the light. Its never even been close after 100ft. I'm sure I'll disentigrate the rear differential soon considering it is still the factory 3.23 but its certainly fun for now. Nothin' like a sleeper-benz.
