Different Air Filters

I was just wondering, I checked the ShopForum a little bit, has anyone done dyno tests between the different air filters on cars. Because I know that paper filters are more restrictive, but I've found that other cars (BMWs..yuck) actually make more power on the stock filter. If I've missed it somewhere in the threads, I apologize, and could someone point me there. If not, I would like to see the results of the different air filters (K&N, Fram,... etc.. whoever makes them). Thanks in advance.

the consensus

in the diesel section is that the stock filters work best. many have tried the k and n and found no increase in power and not as good a filter action. still some believe in them and are running them.

I think the only way to find out which filter is best for your cars performance, is to get the (YOUR!) car on the powerstand, run it a couple of times, then change the filter, and again a couple off runs.

After that you know for sure which is best ON YOUR CAR. That doesnt mean that the same brand is best on ALL cars.

The filtering quality is very hard to measure, so maybe you'll win a few HP, but wear out your engine earlier.

in the nearby future i´m gonna do the above with a Renault: brandnew original filter en brandnew K&N filter.

Ok, yes, the best test would be my own car. In general though, some filters work better than others because of the increased or decreased air flow. I have a W124, and frankly, I think the body is going to rust to bits before my engine wears out, so I'm not real worried. Any responses from people with the different filters?

I remember finding a comparison online a while back comparing different brands of air filters for the same application. They were going by CFM numbers and not engine dyno numbers, just straight up flow through the filter. Here's the shocker, K&N was second to a paper filter, Mann, I think. The thing about the K&N is that it flows better when it is dirty compared to a paper filter that is dirty. Clean, the paper filter is best.
