Knowing when to stop modding/customizing is as much an art as modding/customizing itself.

I'll wishfully think that the owner (or whomever is responsible for the interior) is simply colorblind.... Very cool car though....

I agree with everyone. What's up with that interior? The dash cover looks like something my neighbor when i was a kid used to have, to compliment the clear plastic cover on the seats, which never came off.
Wouldn't kick it out of my garage, either.

Fact, not conjecture

I've driven this car and it is truly stunning. It isn't purple but a nice blue in person. Yes, those a cloth seat protectors convering gorgeous custom Recaros. NO EXPENSE WAS SPARED on this car. It even has a matching spare tire. The gearbox is a BMW-sourced 850[I]CSI [I] 6-speed. A little notchy but those boxes are very strong.

Why didn't I buy this car? To be honest it scared me to think about what upkeep would be like. The unusual mods make it a unique car that needs its own service manual. It needs some attention from the only place truly capable of providing it: RennTech. Those mechanical lifters can be a bear and were used because the owner wanted to wring the maximum from the engine.

Now, as to this car versus a W210 E55, no question. For one thing the W210 will go down as one of M-B's worst cars. To follow the W124 with this tinny electronic nightmare was a sin. At least they arrested the fall with the follow-on E-class. The RennTech "600E" would eat any E55 or M5 (the new one excepted) for breakfast.

Heck, a stock W124 500E can nearly take a W210 E55.

Spot on with the W210 being one of their worst cars, IMHO. From what I hear from people in the know, however, the W211 isn't faring much better in the reliability/warranty repair area though, particularly with electronics.

Cheers,
Gerry

Dilemma

That was the challenge for the seller! Hard to justify a sales price of $65K unless you find someone like me who loves the W124 and appreciates what $80K spent at RennTech on a new (1992) 500E produces. But why would anyone else care?

Comparing a Renntech car to a stock 210 E55 is apples and oranges, not to mention an extra 40 grand for the Renntech. Anyhew...

My 210 E55 hasn't had any issues except the ECU. (80k miles)

The PO had no issues other than regular maintenance.

On my watch it'll do 0-60 in 5 secs flat stock (Motor Trend managed 4.8 secs) and I had it upto 150 mph over the 4th holiday (way out in the country, near the Canadian border) with me and two other passengers. That being said, I won't diss the 500E. Different cars, different era.

I'm seriously thinking about an '03 S600 which kill just about anything on the road, but my wife is having a hard time with such a decision.

Who cares what the wife thinks! Just buy the damn thing and beg for forgiveness after the fact.

Ah, wish it was so easy. There is that little issue of an adoption down the road.

aaaaaaaaaaaah, you got a point.

Instead, in preparation for the adoption, go out and buy a brand new GL wagon, and plead for forgiveness.

I think an S600 would be a safe car for a little one. Although, there is that problem of me wanting to go 0-60 in 4.3 seconds.

I have two adopted ones .... 2.5 and 7 years.

We have to merely make do with an E320 (W124, of course) wagon as a family car. 0-60 chores are normally taken care of with the W124 E500, after I turn the N2O bottle on. More lazy solo or duo cruising is handled by the 560SEC.

Cheers,
Gerry

You have to be really careful with infants. All that acceleration can snap a child's neck at that age. Just be sure you don't scrimp on the car seat, okay?
