Naa... I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet.

I did purchase a new grille insert though... and plan to paint it black when it gets warm enough.

Jim,

What kind of clearcoat do you use? Where do you get it?

Thanks

Willy

Willy:

Yes, my vehicle is covered under a 36-month Starmark warranty; my technician works at Autobahn Motors, a large, Northern California Mercedes dealership.

Forgive me - but I am a bit confused. When you say that you were "able to replace (your) computer with the same exact SW revision and it solved (your) problem," are you refering to the E-GAS Control Unit (ECU) in your 1994 E420?
Further, are you saying that you had the exact same stalling problem/conditions as I have, at present?

As I have stated in this thread, before, I have tried my vehicle's original firmware - with the same result. Apparently, I "inherited" this problem (excessively low idle speed/RPM) from the previous owner.

Per your request, I will post the Bosch part # for my E-GAS Control Unit, as soon as possible; the MBZ part # is listed, in this thread, on Page 4.

Kind regards,

Scott,

I must have missed earlier when you said you tried another computer with the same software version.

The problem I had was not the same. I just had a problem with the check engine light turning on and an error 19 continually being recorded. I simply replaced the computer (yes he injector ECU) with another (same sw version) had everything reset... and it solved the problem.

You said that the fix for your problem is to replace the computer with the same one that has a new software version [23/92 (23rd week of 1992)]. If you're under warranty, why have you not gotten the new computer yet?

I asked for the Bosch#, as many of the salvage search engines catalog the computer with either the MB# or the Bosch#... just in case you need help finding one from a salvage yard.

Willy

Clear Coat / Installation

Willy,
any 'good' brand of spray clear coat will do. Think I got a can from Auto Zone. But make sure, to degrease it first. Also remove the MB star before spraying.

Yuri,
installation is very easy as the link shows. Actually, the part is NOT a precision MB fit so you will have to 'persude' it abit! Here's the link for a second look:

Question for JimF

Jim, this weekend I went to check out the grille which was selling on Ebay since the guy wasn't too far from me but when I saw the grille it didn't look like it wanted to fit my car so decided not to buy it. In your last response you mentined that it's not an exact fit. How much customizing would I have to do to it in order for it to fit. Only the bottom conections/latches matched but the top weren't even close. Maybe it wasn't the right grille ?

thanks, Y.O

Fitment!

Yury,

Yes, it does go together after some 'persuasion'. I did this about three years ago and have forgotten exactly how to make it fit. But you don't have to bend anything permanently or reform the chrome retainer.

As I recall, after starting to screw things together, (it look as though it won't happen), it does go together. Sorry I can't give you the 'trick' because I don't remember what it was.

T minus 19 hours...

...until my E-GAS Control Unit swap-out experiment.

Please stay tuned: I am hoping my RPM will be raised!

delay in E-GAS experiment

Please stay tuned; my E-GAS Control Unit swap-out test was delayed...

I will post again as soon as the test has been conducted.

Thank you for your patience,

I purchased the chips you recommended from Jameco. What they sent me was a chip marked with a big "S" and # 27C256-12 FA. They seem to work fine.

I also purchased the ones from JDR (that I mentioned earlier). Funny thing is that what they sent me was exactly what you recommended buying... the M25C256B-12F1 chip from ST.. and it was only $2.99 there.

WJM

Did you archive your chip image?

If so (if I may ask), what chip do you have, please?

I have a 94 E420. I was able to archive my original factory chip with no problem (ie, save bin file, then make an exact copy onto new blank chip).

understood

I see; I was just curious as to whether or not you upgraded your OEM chip or merely archived it...

Well,

I plan on going the Jetchip route in the near future. In the meantime, I'm looking for any information regarding these computers/chips so that I can try to tinker with it myself.

PAD, Renntech and Jetchip obviously figured out how to modify the code, why can't we?
