TUE 17APR01

I should have obtained conclusive data from my E-GAS control unit swap-out experiment NLT 2100 hours PDT, tomorrow, TUE 17APR01.

Thank you for your patience.

Test Rsults: Round 1

The results are in...

...and, unfortunately, inconclusive.

I tested Eric Hiss' 500E E-GAS Control Unit in my 500E, earlier this evening. Sadly, the experiment provided no new/no usable data.

Since the software revision was not what the one I was told (by my tech and longtime friend) I needed, my car still stalled, in exactly the same (repeatable) manner. Eric is my witness.

* sigh *

My E-GAS Control Unit (Part # 124-545-4532) has the following annotation on its label: "19.05.98 K13"

Eric Hiss' E-GAS Control Unit (Part # 124-545-4532) has the following annotation on its label: "14.01.93 K12"

I will keep trying to divine the cause of this MOST elusive problem. The next thing I will replace is the fuel pump relay. Slowly but surely, I hope to nail this &^%$ing beast!

Feeling a bit "Charlie Brown"-esque,

Wow!

Scott,

We're all very disappointed but probably no more than you.

Spent that past 1-1/2 hours re-reading every post and looked through my CD-ROM. Got some questions.

1) Was the accelerator linkage adjustment 'tweaked'? That should have brought the warm idle speed up, I would think. You can set that almost anyplace by adjusting the nut's tension.

2) According to ALL-DATA, the idle speed control function is determined by; engine speed (TN) signal, engine coolant temperature sensor, selector lever position, and A/C compressor engagement signal. Has the ECT sensor been checked? And the TN signal?

Also what about the ignition control module? If you pull the vacuum line off the 'load module' portion of the ICM, what happens? Also when you plug the end of it?

The LOW end idle speed is spec at 500rpm. Mine typically is around 600 or so when warm/hot. Maybe just a linkage adjustment may fix this????

Just trying to help!!

thank you

Jim,

I appreciate your research and that you spent so much time looking into this, on your own. I will look into your suggestions, soon, when I replace my fuel pump relay.

To answer your questions:

1) I do not know if the accelerator linkage adjustment was adjusted. I will have to ask my tech, since he knows more intimately the history of service/actions takem in the shop.

2) The ECT sensor and the TN signal check out OK.

I will try the ICM experiments you proposed, tonight, and get back to you with the results.

Kind regards,

I dont know if this coincidence or not yet ,but my Battery was defective and was only at 11.4 volts. When I replaced it the stumbling went away. Somtimes simple things work.

thank you, John

I appreciate your contribution; actually, I was planning to replace my battery, next week. I will let you know if doing so has any "added benefits"/positive results (or not).

battery

Hey Scott,
This might be it! I didn't think of this until mentioned in previous posts. I once had an old MGA where the batteries sat behind the seats. Everytime, I would go over a bad pothole or bump the engine would cut out. This turned out to be a loose plate in one of the cells which would get moved around in the battery when the car jostled. Sometimes it would break the connection.
I spent a lot of time trying to find a problem in the engine/ignition but forgot about the batteries maybe because they were out of sight behind the seats!

This would be easy to test with the battery out of the car. use a voltmeter and twist the battery.

As an interested 3rd party on this thread, wouldn't it just be great if a new battery solved the problem? I can tell you that you two guys (n2lw and EricH) would be heroes to Scott!

Scott, if so, I just hope you don't have too much money spent on solving this issue.

Willy

heroes

"We could be heroes...

...just for one day."

OK - so my age is showing (my birthday was yesterday: 26APR68) ... in all seriousness, though,
I would be OVERJOYED if a new battery could solve my problem!

Please stay tuned to this thread; sooner or later (no matter WHAT it takes), this matter will prove to have been RESOLVED, via the teamwork, shown here.

Thank you, Eric, and thanks to everyone else involved!

new battery... old problem

Well...

I am disappointed to share that, despite my brand new (MBZ) battery, I still have the same stalling problem.

Please stay tuned; we'll be right back after a few dozen more messages...

; )

PS:

I have just posted 38 new images on my 1993 500E website...

Pristine!!

The new 'daylight' pics are just great! And that's a little bit of an understatement. For these old eyes, I can see what you've done, and it's marvellous.

My wife would say, "It's so coordinated"! Especially like the rear shots and the corner lens.

<grinning>

Thank you very much, Jim.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to hear everyone's compliments; it makes my efforts seem more worthwhile.

At this rate, I'll need some blatant criticism, soon!

: )

My goal is to post new pictures every week or so. Ultimately, I would like to accept and post images from other 500E/E500 owners, so that we may enjoy a global WWW presence/allegiance

Sincerely,

next step

Hello, once again.

I hope the soap-opera intrigue of this thread finds you
in good health and spirits, today.

I have decided that, next (after I install all my new RENNTech cooling modifications), I will replace my:

- fuel pump relay
- power steering pump

"Let all be made aware: my labors of love continue!"

new idea

I believe I will try a new experiment:

I would like to install a solenoid to regulate the
throttle-plate, under load, such that when I am (U-)turning, it fools the vehicle's electronics.

In so doing, perhaps my fuel/air mixture will not be so lean and - possibly - my stalling problem may be averted.

Anyone...? Anyone...?

("Voodoo electronics")
