i just finished installing an ACCEL Super Coil in my 87 300E. WOW, what a difference. first thing i noticed is it started right up. no delay. the engine also has a different tone to it at idle. (i imagine it sounded like that when it was new.) second, it has no tremble to it at idle anymore, none at all! there is no noticable added performance but im shure i got a few HP's back that i was lacking.
i would highly recommend this coil to anyone who plans on replacing thier stock ignition. i did need to make a bracket for this to work. i will post some pics as soon as i get my digital back.
Thanks for everyones help at MERCEDESSHOP.

Accell

Adam,
Will it work on 190-2.6? How much did it cost you?
Is it easy to install?
Thanks.

Clauser1,
yes, the coil will work on 4cyl-8cyl engines. yours is an inline 6 like mine. the coil costed me around $60 ordered from a auto parts store. get the Accel Electronic super coil, part no. 140008. the coil took me about 2 hours to install including making a bracket. i have a machine shop in my basement so i snaped it out pretty quick. a simple bracket can be made with sheet aluminum a drill and a dremil tool/bandsaw. the ignition wire that is included with the coil did not come with an adaptable boot for the new coil. i just snipped off the old ignition coil boot and replaced it with accels distributor boot kit. (included)
i hope this helps, any other questions?

Accel Igniton Coil

That particular "Super Coil" is sold at my work... What a piece of junk, I put it on my car, it fired up great... but within 5 minutes I had my Oxygen Sensor light come on and a bad "miss" to the engine... I changed back the same night... The OE Coil works fine.... Im gonna swap this one for the other one in stock and see if it was just defective... BTW Dont pay more than $50 at the most... it should be around 40-50max for 140008..

Jason,
Why did you replace the stock coil? Did you have any problems with your car before the change?
Thanks for your input.

Adam, I wish I could be in your shoes!

I'm also in the process of looking for an aftermarket ignition upgrade. I'm for Jacobs more than anything else (it's a prejudice thing), although I'm still keeping my options open.

However, I do have a BIG question here:does anyone know why Jacob's ignition systems require that we leave our stock coils in place for the purpose of triggering their secondary coil? I was told by their techs that this procedure applies to all Jacob's stuff. Anyone has any ideas? Or is it only applicable to my W126 (280SEL)?

Since Jacob's stuff do not come cheap (I was recommnded a system which includes plug wires, computer and coil, for US$517), I really need to do my homework well. Or does the $50-60 Accel Super Coil works equally well?

Thanks~

Like I said, The Universal Accell stuff sucks... I sell it at work and the only things that I dont get complaints on are the plug wires and specific application coils for GM HEI.... I've heard much better reviews from Jacobs, Mallory, etc...

OK... you said it sucks twice.

So why are you STILL going to install another one?????

You wrote: "Im gonna swap this one for the other one in stock and see if it was just defective"

Why bother? It sucks.... remember! What type of logic is that? Makes no sense at all. Trying something you don't believe in. What reason do you have to try again... just to be able to say, "see... it really does suck"?

Both Adam and I have had good luck with it. See my post about 2 weeks ago. It works for us!

Hi David, I did a search for your post 2 weeks ago on the Accel coil, and I have some questions.

Regarding the coil modifications: Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you say you cut off the Terminal boots (the end connector that snaps into the terminals of the spark plugs) of the OEM plug wires, and fitted them onto the Accel wires? I may get an Accel Super Coil too, and I just wanna make sure I have no problems with the compatibility.

My car is a 1983 W126 (280SEL) inline-6, do you think the Accel is able to work in it?

I'm also experiencing a slight rough idle problem with occasional trembles, and I thought it is the fuel pump. Then again, replacing the old-n-tired coil could be worth a try.

Any advice from you guys who'd did-it-and-seen-it-work? I hope to be the next one singing praises here about a new coil upgrade.

Mervyn, I have a 1987 w124030 with 173K miles.
At 135k miles I installed a Jacob's Omni Magnum Ignition System. That's more than 2 years past.
It has performed as they advertise even better.
If it doesn't they will refund your cost.
I use copper cored spark plugs, you know the cheap plan vanilla ones.
My plug gap is at 0.052 inches.
I also timed the plug electrode to the flame curtain position. I know this will raise some negative comments, tough it's my toy.
I've used MSD unit on another German machine and the Jacob's seem to satisfy me.
You will not need a Hot primary coil with the Jacob's unit; the coils are built in. The OEM coil is just a trigger.
Good luck and select wisely not price.

Jason M. shame on you

Jason, just because you had a bad occurrance with a particular product gives you no right to steal some ones JOY.
Don't let anyone steal your Joy and you should steal someone elses either.
I know you Jason and this is not your character.

Hi Don, I wouldnt be surprised if I start calling you my "Ignition coil consultant" soon! Thanks for the advice all this while in our emails correspondent.

You wrote: "You will not need a Hot primary coil with the Jacob's unit; the coils are built in. The OEM coil is just a trigger." Exactly what Jacob's tech said. So Don, is your stock Bosch coil is still residing in your car? (If it works for you, I dont see why it cant work for me!)

Don, I have always wanted to ask you these 2 questions:

1. If the stock coil is already weak, would that undermine the Magnum's prowess? Did you change your stock coil when you installed the Magnum??

2. Does anyone think this setup would work?: an Accel Super Coil triggering the Jacob's Omni Magnum ignition system. If it does, wouldnt it be a real scorcher?

If I'd the means, I would go out and try the above immediately. The possibilities are infinite........

*Don, Jacobs quoted me $430 for the Omni Magnum.I'm baffled.....did you buy from Jacobs?
