How do you determine which one to buy? I see there ore both round ones and oval ones. I'm thinking the 5x8 oval one is what I'd need. Then I guess it's just a matter of determinig the inlet diameter? Is there anything else I need to know to buy the right one?

buy one of the ovals and you just need to determine the inlet/outlet size. You might also need a small resonator but you wont fully know until the muffler is in place. if drone is a issue when installed then get a small resonator. as for the trans Am sound it will be alittle on the noisy side though with this particular muffler. On my friends mustang they have a deep growl to them, but he has no resonators. With a resonator it should quiet it down some.
